I can’t believe that my first semester at Baruch college is almost complete. It’s all going by so fast. But all in all I’m happy with the way that everything has turned out. I’ve made lots of friends and I can’t wait to make more. I’ve been able to grasp something that I will be able to carry with me for the rest of my life in each class. And no matter how much I have said that I’ve disliked some of my teachers, I am all the better for being able to be a part of every one of their classes, and I am thankful for their influence and my experiences with them thus far.

It actually turns out that Baruch did not live up to my expectations. I came into Baruch expecting it to be just like high school and for a very long time it really seemed like it was. But the sooner I got out of that mindset, the better it was for me. In high school I didn’t have to study for quizzes and tests, I could hand in my assignments late, I could show up to class late if I wanted and there wouldn’t be much of an effect. But that was because my teachers cared and there would always be a way to make up for whatever I decided not to do. I confused that with the freedom of college and now I guess I’m paying for it. So if I could have done anything differently it would be to have realized that high school and college are not the same. That way I’d feel better about how I’m doing in all of my classes.

Enrichment Workshop

Today I attended “The Process Production: The Business of Theater” workshop in the Engelman Recital Hall. It was a discussion hosted by Victoria Bailey. She and three others on the financial side of theatrical productions spoke about the ins and outs of their careers, so to educate the audience about the different technicalities of show business. I learned from people with first- hand experience about the structure of commercial theater and not- for- profit theater, and the differences in the structures of the two. It was a very insightful experience and a pleasure to be able to sit and interact the managers of some of Broadway’s most successful productions like “The Book of Morman”, “Anything Goes”, and “God of Carnage”, just  to name a few.

Community Service

For my community service I participated in Feed the 500. It was something that Intervarsity put together. I helped hand out flyers to get people interested and to inform on the eighth floor of the Vertical Campus building the day of, with few of my friends from Intervarsity. It was a fun experience and a nice way to give back. And now I am actually really considering joining Intervarsity so that I will have the chance to do more things like this on a regular basis.

The Rubin Museum

The Rubin Museum was very fascinating. Buddhism and Hinduism are religions that have always greatly interested me so getting the chance to study them more closely was a nice experience.  The art was beautiful and it was so amazing to see such ancient pieces so well preserved. I saw a lot of statues of Gods ornate in gorgeous jewels, some were happy, some were calm, some were furious, some were standing on top of children, it was all so intriguing.

Baruch Voices

I definitely enjoyed Baruch Voices. All of the monologues were amazing and as I sat and watched I was very impressed. All of the monologues were very well put together and I really feel that some of my peers are marvelous writers. The whole thing was just a great experience. I liked how the actors were able to take the experiences of others and interpret them for themselves and the audience without actually cheapening anything.  Some of the monologues were very deep and personal and some were cute and light-hearted. I laughed at certain points and wanted to cry at certain points, which was awesome. All of those really heavy monologues were great, and if you are making a monologue about who you are, then of course you should get personal, but it was never too much to handle, it was intense at times but not too intense.

Negative Nancy–Monologue

Who am I? Its such a miserable question! I don’t know who I am, I don’t know what I like, and I don’t know what I want.  I also don’t know how I’m supposed to figure any of these things out so I wish they’d stop asking.

I look at my life and don’t see how I’ve accomplished anything that really means anything to others or to myself even. Five years from now I’m not going to remember how I won a creative design award for a booth I set up at a trade fair I went to in the twelfth grade.

I know that one day I will figure out exactly what it is that I am looking for, and I know that I will be able to make whatever it is a part of my life. There are lots of people out there like me who live their lives without ever getting an answer. It’s very depressing to think about. But why do I think I’m any different? What makes me special? Well nothing really, I just have hope and ambition and I feel like those are the things that will lead me to wherever I have to go.

About Me

Hello, friends. My name is Shaniece and I am 17 years old. I have a big family with a lot of girls, I have 4 sisters and one brother.  I’m in the middle and that can be hard at times. I grew up in Maryland and moved to Brooklyn when I was 11 years old. Growing up I was always very shy and quiet, and I still am when you first get to know me, but I think I’m starting to grow out of it now. Music and art are my 2 favorite things. I started playing the upright bass about 4 years ago. I had so much fun playing classical music my high school orchestra and the New York All City Orchestra, which is only supposed to be for high school students but maybe I’ll go back this year anyways. I just started playing the bass guitar last year when I got one for Chirstmas, which is also so much fun. And I’ve always liked to draw, and paint, and sculpt. So now that I’m not going to have as much leisure time as I did in high school I  really hope that I will be able to make time for the things that I love to do.
