workshop

I forgot to register for any of the workshops so instead i am going to write about the workshop that we went to as a class.  If you recall the workshop was about sources and how some sources are not good. I thought the workshop was kind of pointless beause the instructor made a big deal how the news lies sometimes, I rememeber being told this in like third grade. I should hope no one takes what they see on the news as 100 percent true. sure some of it is true but a lot of times they edit clips so it reperesents there political points of views, and nearly all the time they leave out information. By now im sure we all know that both Fox and MSNBC are two of the biggest culprtis for distorting or leaving out valuable information. It’s pretty sad how the instrucor showed how 40 years ago you could actually trust the news but nowadays everything i hear i am skeptical of. I wish we lived in a world were we can actually trust people, todays society is all about making a buck even if that means telling lies as a journalists. Why cant we just go back to the way it use to be?

community serivce

I’m a volunteer firefighter for the edgewater park volunteer firehouse in The Bronx. It is the only remaining firehouse in the Bronx. For my community service I didn’t have to go anywhere since I am already apart of this organization so instead I’ll just tell you about what i do and what its like being a volunteer firefighter. I joined the firehouse last year with a couple of my friends. It’s a fun place to hang out in on the weekends but there is also responsibility that comes with being apart of it. There are two meetings every month and a drill once a week, whenever the fire horn rings every member runs up to the firehouse and then deals with the problem wheter it is someone needing oxygen, a gas leak or in the worst case a fire. You may wonder how does everyone go up once a horn rings, but where i live the community is pretty small and close so it takes less than a minute to go up there. Since joining the firehouse i have learned many lifesaving skills and more importantly it helps out the community and creates a closer community where there is trust .I am proud of my community and that is something to say when your living in The Bronx and i wished other communites could be like mine so the borough could become a better and safer place.

Blog Post #3

My first semester at Baruch is only a little bit more than a week away and man am i happy. College is pretty much what i expected it to bee, a lot of writing and reading assignments. I think i did pretty good this semester because i have been able to keep up with these assignments thanks in part to when i am at work lifeguarding all what i do is read anyway. Baruch has been what i thought it was going to be, school. It’s not to exciting  (althugh the protests were) and i really dont have time to get involved into any clubs since i work so much. But i kind of like it like that, it keeps me more focused on the reason im in college, to learn and get a degree as oppose to when im home having fun and being with my friends. I just cannot wait to have a month off to relax and worry only about work as oppose to school and work. I wouldn’t go back and change anything i did this semester because i think i did a good job and i have no regrets. I think this semester has changed me for the better. i have become a more responsible and independent person. I look foward to my month off and taking classes that i actually want next semester.

My Monologue

My name is Jake Kuhl. I was born October 9, 1993. I live in the Bronx in a residental home. I use to live in an apartment but moved when I was eleven years old. I have one younger brother and I have a very close family. I live near the water and I enjoy swimming very much, my father and I own a sailboat and i like to sail. I am also a lifeguard, In the summer i spend most of the days at the beach. I am also a big sports fan. I am a diehard New York Ranger, Jets, and Yankee fan. Hockey is probably my favorite sport, this can be attributed mostly to my grandma who is probably the biggest Ranger fan in the world. My very first hockey game was at madison square garden when i was seven years old, I was with my grandma and my cousin. I played roller hockey throughout my childhood for a local leauge. In high school i played varsity ice hockey for four years and won a championship in my sopohomore year. It would be nice if Baruch had a hockey team but there is still local roller hockey leauges where i live. I decided to go to Baruch because it is a good affordable school. In high school i always thought that i was going to be a lawyer or a businessman but know I really dont know what i want to be. I do want to join the coast guard reserve because i have always loved the water and I think it would be an enjoyable experience. Maybe i will do something in public administartion when i graduate but i still dont know. Well i will found out soon what i am going to do with my life.

Who I am and differences between h.s and college

My name is Jake Kuhl, I am seventeen years old and live in the Bronx. I went to public school from pre-k to the eight grade. I was the valedictorian in the fifth grade and entered a specialized school program in the middle school I.S. 192. There I took high school courses in the seventh and eight grade and graduated with high school credit by passing several regents. I then attended Cardinal Spellman High school, a Catholic school in the Bronx. My education
has greatly affected who I think I am. I have developed many of my beliefs  through my education. I have also had the luxury of experiencing both Public and Private education which has also helped given me a unique perspective on education systems in general and how they help mold you into who you are. My public education was enjoyable and my teachers were generally very good but I found that my Catholic school education has helped mold me into a better person and student as my public school education has provided me with a better understanding of math and science in particular. I believe I am generally a good person with a great work ethic that is also able to have a great time with friends and family. I have always prided myself in being able to do good in school consistently work part time and still have a busy social life. I am also someone who truely believes anyone can do whatever they want if they work hard and have patience and faith. I also love to play sports especially hockey. I have played hockey since I was 6 years old and won a high school championship in my Junior year. I am a little disappointed Baruch does not have a hockey team but I still play on the weekends for a local league. I had a lot of fun in high school but I think there will be some major differences in college. One of the big differences is the commute in the morning. In high school my mom worked close to the school so she would drop me off in the morning now I have take public transportation and it is about an hour and a half commute. Besides the commute I feel there is a lot more freedom in college and with that comes a lot more personal responsibility. It is nice to take less classes but now I feel there is a lot more for school you have to do outside the classroom as opposed to inside. So far there is also a lot more reading than in high school which I actually don’t mind because I would personally rather read than have to constantly be writing something for homework each night. Overall college is much diffident but I look forward to it and I feel I am going to have a good experience.
