Community Service
In high school, my friends and I had joined the Bronx Science Key Club, which is a community service club. We admired people who would go to undeveloped places and help the people there. So we did what we could and we donated blood. Also as Dan had said, free food, yay /o/. However this was back in my high school days. However after becoming high school seniors, my friends and I didn’t go to the club as much, and we ended up just hanging out together after school.
Also near where I live there is a Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club. It is a club for children and teenagers alike. They have a court outside for baseball and other games, skating rink, sprinklers, indoor basketball court, pool tables, ping pong tables, etc. I went there a few times during middle school for a school trip, and had lots of fun, so i decided to volunteer there for the community service requirement. I walked around and helped look for equipment and helped the young kids. Parents would often bring them there after school or they would come themselves. Then around after 5 pm or so, the parents would come and pick them up. Sometimes I would always feel grateful for having my mom waiting at home for me.
A bad thing that happened was, since I lived in the Bronx, I was actually the only Asian there. People would sometimes just give me weird looks as if I was weird being there. Though I also met some new people, they were just as bad at ping pong as me /o/. I usually tell them that I was one of the few fail Asians that can’t play ping pong or draw . They would also often laugh at me. This community service was one of the more enjoyable life experiences. However now I would much rather find a job first.

Workshop 3
I went to the workshop “Build Confidence! Improving Your Interpersonal Skills.” It was one of the earlier ones, on November 1. There were a lot of upperclassmen, and I was kind of surprised. Some of the people there don’t seem like they really needed this workshop, since they looked pretty confident and talked well. At first I had my expectations pretty low, since there was a power point, and I thought how can someone teach confidence while using a power point. But however I was wrong, the power point was used much. We would stand up in the middle and do some exercises.
We started off with everyone standing in the middle of the room, introducing ourselves while doing a weird movement that involves us putting our hands together like when praying and pointing it at someone else saying “Hi, I am blah blah blah.” By watching each others body language, tone and eye connection, we were able to see whether we were nervous or not. One of the exercise was doing a yawn like movement. We would do a short yawn, and then a longer one while trying to project our yawn. The workshop professor said that it would teach us to project our voice better, and we wouldn’t talk in a monotone or too high/low tone when talking to future interviewers. Another is one where we try to match the movements of our partner, however we first had it wrong since we were talking, and didn’t really do what she was asking. Then when we stopped talking and started to match each others movements, it was really awkward.
I felt the workshop was pretty helpful. I felt kind of awkward in the workshop, but it went by pretty nicely. The workshop professor gave us nice tips on how to do well in a interview. The professor was happy and wasn’t afraid to make a fool of herself to show us how things should be done. I felt like these workshops are pretty useful, and will continue to go if needed.

My first semester at Baruch College is about to end. I felt as if I haven’t changed much though. I still seem childish, and most of all I don’t seem 18 at all. I still like procrastinating, though I end up regretting it a lot later on. But after saying that, I would always get things done on time. I put my likes over the things I need to get done. I still enjoy playing online games, which my parents would often laugh at me about…They would always say that now I am 18 years old, I should act my age and stop playing these “little kid games.” Of course I would not reply to them, and I still play them.
This college has pretty much lived up to my expectations. There is a high diversity in the college, and I met some great friends. My schedule of course could have been better, but my college friends had already warned me of the schedules during freshman year. The thing that worried me the most was having three essays due on the same week. I would always tell myself that I should do my essays when I get them and get them over with, which never happens.
If I could do things differently during my first semester, I would actually study for that political science test. It may not be my favorite subject, but I should still study for it. I would have liked to have chosen another subject for my English class’ final paper, since writing about the recession is pretty boring. I would have liked to have gone to the high school homecoming with my friends, since we all ended up having things to do. I had class, and my friends were busy. Another thing that would have been nice would be having the same days off as my friends from high school. We always wanted to go out one of these days, but we were never able to find a day to go out together. We don’t want to go out on weekends because we are lazy and we want to rest on the days off.
This semester was a relatively pretty good one. I hope next year would be as well. Also I hope everyone has a great Christmas and a Happy New Years.

Monologue
College life is currently going great for me. However all my classes seem to somehow involve history, a subject I am not particularly enthusiastic about. However the class I currently enjoy the most is History. The professor is funny and captures the class attention even though it is the last class of the day. My favorite days however are Monday and Wednesday, the days in which I only have one class.
A challenge in adapting to college life is the amount of reading. It wouldn’t be so bad if the readings weren’t so terribly boring. Reading would either make me start spacing out and forgetting what I had read, or make me start falling asleep. The next challenge is taking the train. Usually whenever I get a seat, there is always someone next to me trying to squish me. Another bad thing about the subways is the smell of pee and rats…ugh D:… The smell gets worse when it rains or when it’s humid. Sometimes when the door closes, the smell would go away, but sometimes it would find another way in. There is also the buses. Everyone likes to make a line when the bus is not there, however when they catch sight of the bus, the line becomes a blob of people running for the bus.
What I enjoy most in college is the lower amount of time spent in school. However the schedules can be quite annoying. Before my AP scores were received I was in calculus (on Monday and Wednesday.) I had a four hour break between calculus and sociology. Luckily I only had calculus once or twice.

I am Mindy, and I’m came from China when I was quite little. I stayed in United States for a bit over ten years. Even though I have been here for so long, I can never quite grasp the concept of grammar. I hope I can continue to improve it, along with my vocabulary. Over the years, I met a lot of good friends, and I plan to meet more in Baruch.
During the last year in high school, my friends and I were all excited about college life. We were all going to different schools and knew how hard it would be to keep in touch, especially since one of us going to a state across the country. Well keeping in touch isn’t as hard as it was back in the days, however everyone has to work to keep in touch. If there is only one person trying to keep everyone together it would not work. The perfect example was what happened to my middle school friends. The rest of us are staying in New York, but so far we’ve all been busy to meet up. Sometime around Thanksgiving my friend in Washington will come back for homecoming.
Even though we all went to different colleges, we all agreed on three things. One is that we have a lot of reading to do, second is that books are very expensive and that college isn’t as different from high school as we thought (except with a larger range of age for the students). For me; however; I didn’t take the subway to high school, but now I have to take it everyday. At first I was scared of getting lost; my friends said that I would be an idiot if I managed to get lost in the subway. Taking the subway takes the same amount of time as getting to high school.
As the year goes by, I begin to wonder how I will change. I also wonder whether I will grow a bit. My mom always says “You think you will still grow?…hahaha…” ;o;. But seeing how even a caterpillar needs time to become a butterfly, I will slowly change through out college. I hope I will be able to study better, and manage my time better. Entering college as a caterpillar, and transforming into a butterfly throughout college.
