Community Service

I tutored middle school kids during my time of community service.  The field I tutored was 8th grade mathematics, this experience made me remember how easy I had it when I was their age. Of course the real challenge was being able to explain to it the kids, it made me realize how challenging it must be to be a good teacher. When I got to know some of the kids, I noticed they didn’t care and most didn’t bother trying. I could relate to them in such a sense, they weren’t really given much motivation. My way of teaching them was showing them how I solved it, explaining why each part fit and somehow relating it to other things. Each kid learned differently, I suppose thats how it works and makes it much harder for a teacher to help an entire class do well. With the time I’ve spent tutoring these kids, I am hoping that i did a good job and that these kids will begin to do better.

What you know/Who you know

This workshop provided some information on mentors. Mr. Jorlui, the presenter had informed us that its not just about what you know , but who you know. A mentor is someone that gives guidance to another to those who need it. A mentor goes out of their way to help someone that needs it. It is not a good idea to cancel meetings with mentors, unless it is an emergency. A mentor has gone through everything the mentee hasn’t experience yet, so it is a necessary learning experience for the mentee. It is also known that companies who actively seek people to take specific positions are looking for responses. It’s better if the person replies to the company rather than the company seeking them out. I’ve also been informed about the Baruch career development center and the linkedin website. This workshop has been somewhat informative, I’ve gotten the message that its not just about what you know, but who you know.

So what do I think of Baruch college now? Well, I feel it’s just  ordinary. It has lived up to my expectations, but the dull classrooms, escalators, and not to mention elevator doors with only one side opening  are pretty disappointing. Other than these”minor” dissapointments, its just fine. I have one last complaint on the fact that some of the people are very immature or just plain idiots(specifically my Calculus class, it is very painful to sit through), but thats a different matter, not much to do with college I suppose. My college experience is okay, but I probably could have been more active. I’m not a very social person, I feel I could improve on that a bit more. If I could redo my first semester, I’d try to turn ALL of my grades into As. In fact, college has changed me to care more about my grades, I didn’t really care before to be honest. From next semester on, I will dedicate my  time to improve on my grades and make up for my mediocre performance from this one. Later on, i may become more active in the college community. This will probably improve my experience here in the future,. However its only a thought, no guarantee I suppose. I don’t think I have had a dramatic change during this semester, it’s probably still too early to tell. I am very close to deciding on a major, so I’ve planned ahead. In time, I believe college will help me get rid of procrastination. I hope the experience gets better as time goes on.

Monologue- Inspiration

Whats on my mind is inspiration, many people have ideas that influence them, thus I have my own. What inspires me, of course are ideals and imagination, ones that break the limitations of what can or cannot be done. Through those ideas, advancements and more newer ideas can be formed. I have thought about other-worldy ideas as have other people, but imagination is what gives me inspiration. Albert Einstein once said “Imagination is more important than knowledge”. This quote inspired me, and imagination in general inspires me. Knowledge has its limits, while imagination has none.  All of this is ambiguous, there is no right and wrong answer. Imagination  is ambiguity as there is no limit to the amount of possibilities one can encounter. Some fictional stories have inspired me such as mystery novels(most notably Sherlock Holmes which I have yet to finish reading). Arthur Donan Coyle has created a very inspiring main character (with great perspective and logical thinking skills) in which I would like to ever meet one day. I’ve also got some crazy imaginations on how the world would be like if it was like a video game. Video games are developed with imagination, just like how fiction books are written. I know a good chunk of people wouldn’t like it, but heck I would, and it sure would be nice to have a retry option in reality. =)

Who I am

I am someone who is straightforward, for the most part. I can’t explain on the top of my head who I really am. As I’m writing this, I’m putting down whatever comes to mind about who I am. For some reason,  I feel as if I’m a contradiction. I could be a kiss-up or just plain stubborn, or that’s how I could be looked at. I don’t feel I am either because I have opinions, but I am not really stubborn about them as I usually have logic to back up my opinions. Aside from that, I am a go with the flow person. I’ve wanted to change that for a while now, but I’m so comfortable with it that it’s hard. One can say I’m cynical about certain things but I see them as logical. I wonder if one can call that stubborn? Aside from that, my hobbies lie on technology. I’m always using technology such as the laptop I’m writing on, smart phones, televisions, consoles etc. I use them and I try to understand them, such as how they work and how to improve them. I’m not exactly a tech junkie as I haven’t been doing such in depth studies nor do I take apart and reassemble. I would however like to further understand my knowledge for them. Through that my hobbies are basically video games and stuff, yeah I’m one of those people. My college life so far is just OK, nothing really extraordinary and I’m sure it’ll stay just OK for me. Last thing to note, I prefer critical thinking activities with high fun factor above others. I’m not sure whether I’ve told enough about myself, but I feel there would be too many unnecessary info.
