About Judy Chen

Hey! My name is Judy and I'm currently a freshmen at Baruch. I'm from West Hempstead, LI. I love playing tennis, eating, and photography.

My Freshmen Year at Baruch

Although this semester has gone by really fast, I feel like a lot has changed. I learned so much from time management to making new friends. I remember the day before Freshmen Convocation, I was really worried that I would not make any friends. I mean, the last time I had to make new friends was…kindergarten. The people I became friends with back then were my friends throughout the rest of elementary school, middle school, and high school. I remember my friends back in high school reassuring me that everyone else there would be new students as well and that making friends would definitely not be a problem for me. Fortunately, they were right. I made amazing friends here at Baruch-and it’s only been the first semester!

Time management has become so important in my life. Knowing how to prioritize my homework and projects while volunteering on the side has been an everyday thing now. I’m grateful though because it helps me sharpen my responsibility and organizational skills even further. Time management is extremely important because tasks that must be completed eventually have to become completed, it’s just knowing how and when to do it matters.

I’m actually not disappointed with my first semester here at Baruch. I was a bit regretful that I did not choose a school with a real campus feeling to it but turns out having the city as your campus is even better! I love the city, growing up in Long Island was a bit suffocating so having the urban feeling is actually refreshing. I especially love how you can get anywhere in the city just by hopping onto a train.

Overall, I had fun this semester and learned a lot, can’t wait for the next!

I’m weird but that’s okay

“Don’t dwell on the past, learn from it”. I love this saying for several reasons. For starters, it’s something I can relate to often (as many others can, I imagine). I’m someone who makes mistakes after mistakes, and looking back I tend to always feel regret. Lots of people have asked me “if you could go back in time, would you?” Before they even finish asking the question my immediate answer would be YES. Although I have also done lots of things that I should be proud of the mistakes I made tend to be overwhelming. However, I am not here to complain about the past but rather to acknowledge the fact that I think I am learning the second part of that quote, “learn from it”. It’s not easy, but it’s definitely do-able.

Let’s start from the beginning, my name is Judy, born and raised on Long Island. My family is from Southern China; I can speak Chinese and English. Although the former isn’t always grammatically correct. I am a daughter, granddaughter, older sister, friend, and student. I think I like the role of granddaughter the best; spending time with my grandparents is probably my all time favorite pastime, call me lame, but it’s true.

My biggest fear involves two things; pigeons and rats. I can’t really explain it, but they are just so bleh.

So here I am…at Baruch College. I’ve been asked several times “oh how’s Baruch?!” and I really don’t know how to reply. I feel like its high school plus a ton more time management roles and all nighters.

Lot’s of things make me happy. Like I’m weird like that, because I can be sitting in the subway and if I see someone get up for an old person, that makes me happy. I guess it’s because its rare to see good deeds being done. Or maybe it’s because I’m just really weird. I also love photography, cooking, and playing tennis. Since you probably all think I’m extremely weird at this point, I might as well mention that I love playing tennis with the handball court walls. Yeah… I know what you’re thinking, but that’s just how I roll :)

Musica

Hm..although I enjoy listening to all types of music (especially Taylor Swift!) Although, my current fave is a song that is not by her.

It’s Price Tag…by Jessie J.

The reason I absolutely adore this song is because of the underlying message. Guys, it really isn’t all about money. Like the lyrics states, “just stop for a minute..and smile”

New York City is a super fast paced city. Everyone is rushing somewhere-work, school, home. We really should just stop for a minute and smile. Enjoy life.

People base their careers on the amount of zeros in their salary. There are very few people that actually do what they do because they enjoy it. Most people do it for the money. Debatable. Yes. But the majority usually goes for the choice that pays the best. I want to find a career that I will enjoy not because of what I am getting paid, but because I really do enjoy it. I really hope I find that special career. And..I guess that is why I am here at Baruch. Trying to find myself and find out what I enjoy doing.

Here’s a youtube link to the song! Listen to it if you haven’t heard it before!

Who I Am :)

I think…I am a girl who loves to have fun and can be immature sometimes but when it comes down to important things I can get pretty serious.

My top three concerns about my freshman year:
1. Wanting to join multiple clubs but finding it hard since they are all during club hours.
2. My grades
3. Completing homework the way the professor wants it done because sometimes I tend to interpret things differently and end up doing the wrong thing.

I think the major difference is I am not going home to my parents, I’m not waiting for dinner to be made, and I’m not waiting for my mom to do laundry. I actually feel more independent. The work hasn’t been terrible so it’s comparable to high school’s. The commuting makes it feel like high school, except instead of a car, I’m taking a subway.

I think my first year here will teach me lots of things. We learn from our mistakes and from the weeks I’ve been here I’ve made plenty. It’ll definitely teach me about spending my money wiser, not procrastinating, and getting around using public transportation.

P.S since I love photography here’s a picture I took my senior year of high school. It won first place in my school and was at an art gallery show at C.W Post  🙂
