First Semester Done
my first semester at baruch was definitely memorable. my entire block got really close with each other, and we created a bond that cannot be broken. The whole transition from high school to college went really smoothly. I definitely enjoy college life better than high school life because of the freedom, but I know that college is definitely tougher academic-wise. I regret a lot of things i have done during this semester but it seems a little too private to mention on this blog post lol. I met the girl of my dreams in college as well, so i would like to thank baruch for giving me the oppurtunity to meet her and to find the one that makes me happy =]. I dont think ive changed at all during the whole first semester though. In high school ive always been the type of guy to have a big sense of humor and was really caring, and in college, i’m still the same Austin. I love to bring happiness and joy towards the people that are around me. I struggled a lot in the beginning of the semester because of a fraturnity, but ever since leaving that kind of life, ive been doing a lot better in school, and i havent looked back since. So my grades are starting to pick up a lot and i couldnt be happier. I’ve been working really hard at work also, harder than i usually work, because ive been wanting to obtain a promotion. Ive worked at the same place for about 4 years now, and am looking to expand and to achieve a higher status. I had fun memories being in this freshman seminar class also, and i definitely wont forget it.

Community Service
So for my community service, i decided to help out my own church. During this type of season, there is this activity called kettling, where you would stand outside with a kettle and a bell, and ring that bell in order for people to come and donate money. I thought this was a great cause in order to help the church and in order for the church to help others. So on december 3rd, i stood outside of the big HSBC bank in chinatown between bowery and canal street for about 4 hours. It was really cold outside, and whenever people pass by and look at me, they would either come donate money, or just walk away, and whenever someone would walk away, you have a real bad feeling inside of you. I get really joyful when kids come upto me and donate some money into the kettle also.

Workshop
I attended a workshop titled “Between Two Worlds”, and i realized that we are really lucky to be in the United States. This workshop showed a documentary about the struggles in Israel. This film showed that there are people in the world who stand up and would die for what they believed in. People were upset when certain facts that they believed to be false were shown in the film. The saddest part of the film was when it showed how the tanks ran over a girl named Rachel who was protesting peace in Israel. I believe that everyone should know the positives and the negatives about the country. Once the negatives are identified, we should work towards solving those problems.

My Monologue
I am Austin Chung, born on May 4th, 1993, 18 years old. English is my first language and surprisingly my chinese is really poor. Because of the fact that I grew up in Brighton Beach which is filled with Russians, and that I was basically the only asian/chinese person in my school when i was young. The word “passion” means a strongly willed emotion towards something. I have passion for when it comes to billards or when it comes to my church. Ive been playing billards since my freshman year in high school so about 4 years and it is a big part of my life. Sure i play a lot of sports like basketball and handball, but i find billards to be the one activity that i truly put 100% focus in and that calms me down when i need to. I love the experience of going to a new pool hall and challenging new people i have never met before. So far in my whole life ive joined 3 tournaments and have won 3 tournments, 1 of them being from my own high school billards tournament. Billards also goes together with my church. In my freshman year in high school, i joined a summer school program for kids as a volunteer. Four years later i’m a head teacher in the children’s department and am still currently working there. I love working with kids. Besides working with the kids i go to church every sunday. I’ve become a soldier at my church which is another way of saying i was baptized. And ive even convinced my Lieutenant, in other words the man who owns the building, to add a pool table and ping pong tables on the 3rd floor at my church. So as of now, i am currently a full time student at Baruch College, work in the after-school program at my church after my classes end, work in the saturday program at my church, have responsibilities on sundays as my duty as a christian, and have the time to teach people tips and ways to practice how to become a better billards person at my church. School/Billards/Church. Thank you.

Austin Chung’s Introduction
I think I am a fun loving and caring person. I think of myself as a fun loving person because, I’m always outgoing and I have a big sense of humor. I usually do a lot of silly things to make people laugh, or I find a lot of things said by other people to be funny. I think of myself as a caring person because I’ve been working with kids for about 4 years now. I work in a children’s program in the church called The Salvation Army. I’ve been a head teacher there for about 3 years after my first year of volunteering, and I have to admit I love taking care of kids. People always tell me that “Oh, Austin you’re going to be a great father one day.”, or “Austin you’re definitely going to become a teacher when you grow up.” I think my life in college so far has been very different compared to my high school life. In high school, I had the same classes at the same exact times every single day, but in college it’s different. The assignments in college are given all at once and given a due date to do them. In high school the assignments are usually given a day before they’re due. I feel meeting people in college is a lot easier than in high school also. In college it seems so much easier to just go up to someone and just introduce yourself, because you see everyone as a mature adult now. I can actually leave school in the middle of my day to go and buy something to eat, while in high school, I’d be stuck eating school lunch everyday with the same people. I want my first year of college to change me to become a more independent and sociable person. In high school I was a pretty sociable person who talked to everyone, but I’d gain friends who just say hi and bye. I’d rather have long conversations with people to obtain more knowledge about them. I already see myself as becoming more independent, because I look back at the friends I have in high school, and it feels like they’re in “prison”. They go to the same classes everyday and have homework almost everyday. I’m enjoying my time here in Baruch College so far. I’m keeping my eyes open in joining the clubs. I’ve been going to the Baruch gym and handball courts lately to play and meet new people/friends. I’m still currently working in my church and play ball almost all the time. Thank you for reading!
