Workshop Blogg Post- Bianca Nardella

Last Thursday, I attended the Sidney Mishkin Gallery. At this gallery it displaced many of Milt Hinton’s Jazz photgraphs.  He started photographing all the back in 1936.  He carried his camera everywhere and took pictures of virtually everyone in the “world of jazz.”  I found this very interesting because all of these photographs took place in the streets, bars, recording studios, and even bus stations of New York City.  If you are from New York, just by looking at the pictures one can tell that they were taken in New York City.  Many of Milt Hinton’s subjects included Cab Colloway, Billy Taylor, Willie “The Lion” Smith, Benny Goodman, Thelonious Monk, Gene Krupa, Louis Armstrong, Sarah Vaughan, Pearl Baily, Ella Fitzgerald, and the very famous Barbara Strisand.

Milt Hinton says that he “tryed to capture something different.”  He would sneak up on people and snap a photo when they least expected it.  This is what i found most interesting.  One particular photo in the gallery that cought my attention most was ashot of a regular New York street with a few people walking opposite ways.  This was interesting to me because even way back in 1936 the streets of New York remained to have the same type of look.  Everyday when walking to class I see people walking beside me.  Some are walking the same way and some are walking the oppostie way.  This daily action that I do was basically captured in Milt Hinton’s camera and is now displayed in the Sidney Mishkin Gallery at Baruch College.

Blog post#2

Hi, as many of you know already my name is Bianca and I am a Baruch college student.  Being a first year college student there are a few difficulties that come along with that.  My major problem that I am having is probably time management.  I like to leave my work until the last minute to do.  Even though that’s not the best idea, I still manage to get all of my work done on time.  As far as my classes go, many of them are going very well.  Political Science and Anthropology are the exception.  My political science teacher does not teach at all and my anthropology class is very hard to understand the information.  After discussing this problem with this class in Freshman Seminar, half of my class went down to the department of anthropology and complained and ever since then, the teacher has changed her ways in the classroom and has not only made the class tolerable but actually interesting to sit through.

Since I am officially a student here at Baruch I can say that I play the role of a freshman in college.  I also play the role of a daughter to my mother and father, a niece to my aunt and uncle, a godmother to my little cousin, a girlfriend to my boyfriend, and an overall fun person.

When it comes to my high school and college experience, I definitely enjoy my college experience better.  In high school everyone “babied” you and questioned every little thing you did.  In college no one really cares or worries about you because it is up to you to do well in each class.  College also offers me a lot more freedom then high school did and allows me to become more and more responsible.

Some of the things that I enjoy doing most when I have free time are hanging out with my friends and my boyfriend, going out, and just having a good time in general.  Man things that I do NOT enjoy, that can also be called fears would be snakes, spiders, fire, and pigeons.  Although many people will say that pigeons are a strange fear to have, I am actually terrified of the though of being pooped on as they fly over my head.  Whenever one comes near me I literally run away from it.

Everyone in the worst has had to have at least one embarrassing moment in their life.  One of my most embarrassing moments in my life would have to be the nigh I was out at a club with a few of my girlfriends.  As I was walking down the stairs to use the bathroom I tripped over my own two feet and I went tumbling down the whole flight of stairs.  I was absolutely mortified. Luckily not many people were around to see me.

On a higher note, although everyone has their downs in life, they also have theirs ups and feelings of accomplishment.  The one time that I felt extremely accomplished was when I helped my friend get his high school diploma.  My friend had a lot of trouble with math so since I was good in math I helped him study for his final test.  With my help, he passed the test, which allowed him to get his diploma.  This not only made him happy but it made his family happy and it felt great knowing that I helped him accomplish that.  Because of this, my motto in life is “Never give up.”  If everyone in life gave up, then no one would accomplish his or her goals.

Blog #1-Who am I?

Who do you think you are?” Well, for starters I am Bianca Nardella and as of a few weeks ago, I am a freshman here at Baruch College.  As of right now I am just an average 18-year-old girl who likes to have a good time.  To be honest, I wasn’t too sure of it I wanted to attend Baruch in the fall.  I was torn between staying home and commuting or going away and dorming.  I obviously picked to stay home and commute and so far its not that bad.  To me, school is school no matter what, and its up to you to make it fun for yourself.  One of my concerns starting college at Baruch is keeping my GPA up.  It is a lot harder to keep your grades up when you are taking one or two tests, as opposed to 10-15 tests like high school. Another major concern is managing my time and making sure I leave enough free time to do my schoolwork.  In high school I didn’t get as much homework as I do in college and it is definitely a major change.  Although it will be difficult, as time goes on I will learn different strategies for managing my time properly.  My last and important concern at Baruch was making friends.  Luckily I made a few friends the day of orientation and continued to keep in touch with them up until school started.  Not only that, but I also know quite a few people from high school that are in my classes now.  So far, my Baruch college experience is very different than my high school experience.  In high school, everyone is babied and the teacher basically “holds your hand.”  They yell at you for being on a cell phone, they yell at you for chewing gum, they yell at you if you are roaming the halls, ect.  In college, its not that the professors do not care, but it is that they believe that we are responsible and mature enough to make the right choices, such as going to class, paying attention, do homework (even if he/she doesn’t check it).  College has a lot more freedom and allows you to do what you want to do. I think that my first year at college will not only teach me more and educate me more, but it will also mature me and allow me to become a more responsible person.
