My Baruch Experience

It has been four months since I entered the door of Baruch
College. Although a lot of things are not what I expected, I think I still
enjoy it because I have made a lot of friends, and I have encountered a lot of
nice people here. However, I cannot ignore the academic difficulties compare to
High School, I hope I survive through four years. Starting spring semester, I
am no longer in a block program which makes me kind of sad, but I still look
forward to my future in Baruch.

Finding your passion, major/minor fair

Last time I went to a workshop which I have known through
StarrSearch. The workshop was about finding what you would like to do in the
future, and what major would be suitable for you. The workshop had two parts. In
the first one, we got chances to interact with the speaker as he introduced to
us different majors or career options , then the second one we got our result
of the vocational test (which was our assignment from the first part, and which
we had to finish at home). Overall, I think this workshop is very helpful and I
was very pleased with my result of the vocational test.  The workshop taught me a lot about different career options and gave me more confident to pursue a major in Communication.

Class Registration workshop

In this workshop I learned a lot more about Baruch’s policy for class registration,
and I think it definitely helps me to decide what courses to take for the
following semester. I also learned about the three-time policy, the difference
between a W grade and a WU grade, and the difference among BBA, BA, and BS
degree. Furthermore, I think the advisor is very funny and nice throughout the
whole time. I hope she is my academic advisor!! Overall, I think this workshop is very helpful.

I HAVE A DREAM

My name is Wendy, and I HAVE A DREAM. My
dream is the reason why I came all the way, across the Pacific Ocean, and
landed in the United States of America. It is why I left my dearest family and
friends, and why I am standing here today as a student in Baruch. My dream is
like my best friend. It cheers me up when I am down, guides me when I am lost
in the crossroads of life, motivates me to go for things I wouldn’t dare to
try, and pushes me to my limits every time I am about to quit. I believe we all
have dreams, or had dreams. When we were little and naïve, we dreamed about
becoming the president, the astronaut, or a super hero. However, as reality
hits us, we don’t dare to dream big anymore, and I don’t think it’s a bad thing
to keep your feet on the ground because reality truly is a cruel thing. So my
dream is actually quite simple yet not easy to accomplish…I don’t dream to be a
millionaire and I don’t dream to be a face on the cover of a magazine. You
might wonder, “What exactly is this dream of mine that I am bragging about?”
Here it is, I dream that in the far future, I will be able to look into my
grandchildren’s eyes and say to them that grandma had a good life, a few good
laughs, and most important of all, grandma does not regret a single thing she
did.

Afterward: My monolog actually answers the
questions “What is your biggest fear?” and “What are your expectations of
college experience?” As you can see, my biggest fear is to live a regretful
life, and my expectation for myself in the future is to prevent this from happening;)

Hi,I am Chuyun Huang (Wendy)

Hello, everybody!!My name is Chuyun Huang but you probably won’t recognize this name because people usually call me Wendy. I think of myself as a very normal Taiwanese teen that happens to be studying in Baruch College.Well, if you want to learn more about me, I would say that I am a very out-going, talkative, and fun-loving person. I like to try new things, I like to laugh out loud, and I really enjoy spending time with my friends who make me laugh and laugh and laugh.

My first concern for my first semester here in Baruch is not being able to reach a high GPA like everyone said I should, I understand that it will be difficult to pull up your GPA in later semesters, but I don’t know how to achieve this goal since some of my professors don’t even make sense to me. And that’s where my second concern comes in, right now, I am struggling in my anthropology and math class, and the reason I am struggling is because I simply do not understand the materials, as if they taught us things are from outer-space, and I just don’t get them! Finally, my last concern is that I don’t have a specific major yet, I know this is my own problem, so hopefully I can figure out what to major in by the end of this semester.

To this point, I think college and high school are two different worlds. College is definitely more difficult and you can feel the pressure just looking through the syllabus. On the other hand, high school, and I am referring to my senior year, it was just a place where you go, sit around all day doing nothing. So for me, I definitely enjoy my college life better, and I think the best part is that you have more freedoms and people treat you like adults, not kids.

I think/I hope my first year college experience will change me into a better person, someone who is smarter, more mature, and above all, more clear about one’s future.
