Reflection
1) Entering Baruch, I was a little bit nervous and scared. I felt like it was going to be one of the hardest years of my life academically. But it turned out to be quite the opposite. I had a lot of a fun in this first semester. It wasn’t as difficult as I expected it to be.
2) I think my first semester in Baruch went very well. I earned good grades. I met many new friends. I learned a lot. I got a good understanding of what my remaining three and a half years here will present me.
3) One thing I would do differently in my first semester would be not being lazy and not leaving my work till the last minute. Late nights in college are horrible. I’ve learned to do anything in my power to stay away from them.
4) Every since I started Baruch, I’ve gained much more knowledge from my academic studies. In the past, my studies didn’t really have to do with current day life. But in college, seeing everything apply to daily life makes it very helpful.

Community Service- Self Evaluation
1) How did your community service work help the community?
My service greatly helped many members of my community. Without my help of building Sukkah’s for different homes, many community members would be unable to practice the Jewish holiday of Sukkot this past month. The Sukkah is used throughout all eight days of the holiday.
2) What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project?
At first, I was not enthusiastic about my task at all. I thought what I would be doing would be a complete waist of my time and energy. But as I started participating, I came to realize that what I was doing was a big deal and that I was doing it for the whole Jewish community so that they would be able to observe the holidays.
3) How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others?
It doesn’t happen often that I give my time and energy to someone else, but when I do, I know it’s for an important reason. It gives me the feeling pride in my community and it makes me feel good to give something to my community after all its done for me over the years.
4) What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site?
As I went from house to house building the Sukkahs, I learned that each and every one of my community members appreciate the work that I put in on that day. I learned that without my work, many of them would have a totally different holiday. I’ve learned that they care for me and what I do, and as a result, I learned that I indeed care for my community members as well.
5) What stands out as the best and/or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences?
I actually came out of this with a learning experience about structural building and layout and design. A “Sukkah” is a little temporary dwelling place, which has to be built very carefully and precisely. I came out of the experience learning about how to build things properly.
6) How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society?
This project in particular relates strongly to my high school education. Coming from a Jewish high school, I’ve learned a lot about Jewish religion and heritage, and this holiday has been emphasized heavily throughout my years at the high school. For once, I felt like I was finally using something that I have learned from high school.
7) How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session?
I believe my community service experience relates to leadership in the sense that, in order to be a leader, one must sacrifice something of value to himself for others. And on that day, I sacrificed my time and energy for other members of my community, simply because I felt obligated to give something back to them for all they have done for me. I also felt like a leader among the younger members of my community because I was showing them the importance behind community service and how much it means to keep a community alive and going.
8) How has your community service experience changed your thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and community service work as a whole?
The community service has changed my attitude toward my community members heavily. I’ve learned that every bit of energy in you can make a world of a difference and can help someone else greatly. All it takes is a little bit of time and effort. I’ve learned that I should never turn down an offer of community service ever again because this is what keeps a community running.
9) How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself throughout this experience?
Most important thing I’ve learned is that I indeed can make a difference in my community. If your determined to make a positive change in your community by helping it, even if it’s a small thing, then your community will stand out to be something special.
10) Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or why not?
I was very satisfied with my experience because I knew that without my help, many Jewish community members would have been stuck not being able to practice the holiday. Knowing that I gave them an opportunity to practice the holiday makes me feel very good about myself.
11) Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not?
I see myself staying involved in community service throughout my whole life because I would like to take the roll of a leader in my community to show everyone the importance of giving up your time for your community. Community service is a very important matter in the community, and it is important to start at a young age, and to keep it going as long as you can.
12) Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-or two-sentence headline:
If I were to sum up my service-learning experience in one line I would say: “The smile that I have seen on my community member’s faces brings me a great feeling of pride for my community, and makes me realize how much they appreciate me”

Monologue- JN
Hello everyone,
My name is Josh Namdar. I am 18 years old.
- This is my first year in college. I have few concerns as a freshman here at Baruch College. One of my concerns would be my ability to make my transition from High School to College smoothly. Going to college after 4 years of high school is a big step and it has always been something I thought would be hard to deal with since there is a big difference in the amount of workload and time you receive in high school. A second concern, and biggest fear I have is: maintaining a good enough GPA to make it into the Zicklin School of Business. The business school here at Baruch is the prime reason to why I chose Baruch. If I don’t keep up the grades necessary to get in, then my goal has been shattered. My third concern is whether or not I’ll be able to handle the workload throughout my 4 years here. It is important for me to learn how to manage my time and complete all my work on time. If I can master that, it would make my time here at Baruch much easier.
- So far, one thing that makes my college experience different from my high school experience is the diverse culture in my surroundings. Becoming friends with differently cultured people teaches you a lot about the world we live in and will always be good for you in the future. I’m enjoying being around many of my friends from home as well. I’m also enjoying the campus life. It is always high-spirited and fun to be in the building.
- My current biggest challenge with school is learning to find a balance between leisure time and time for schoolwork. I’ve learned that leaving work till the last minute will indeed hurt me. I must learn that schoolwork has priority. I think my first year at college will change me in the sense that I will learn to be more responsible as a person and I will learn how to manage my time and work. It will allow me to get a better idea of how to balance personal life issues and school issues.
- As of now, school has been going well for me. Though there is a lot of work, I have started to learn how to manage my time better and better as the weeks go by. School here teaches me how to think and how to express my ideas and thoughts in a better sense. I feel more educated as every day goes by. Not only are the professors great, but also the subjects they teach interest me.
- My favorite hobby is playing basketball. I started playing basketball at a young age. It’s something I’m good at and something I put a lot of work to in my free time. I have been on my community basketball team for 4 years straight, and in the last year I was named captain of the team. We were looked down as underdogs in the beginning of the season, but we pulled together as a team to win our community a championship for the first time in 15 years.
- One thing I really dislike is reading. As crucial as it is, I find it boring and very hard to concentrate when I read
- I identify myself as a smart and funny person. I get along with people and make friends easily. Having friends by your side you whole life is something I think is very important. You never know when you’ll need them.
- One of the key roles in my life is being a good older brother to my siblings. It’s important for them to have some to look up to and come to in times of need. Family is more important than anything for me in my life. My grandparents are the most important people in my life. They are the most influential and heartwarming family in my life. They treat me as if I’m one of their children. They always bring the best out of me and always put a smile on my face.

Who Do You Think You Are?
Hello all,
My name is Josh Namdar. This is my first year in college. I look forward to my remaining years in Baruch College. I think Baruch is the best place for me to grow as an individual and to learn to my best ability. Let me share with you a few concerns of my freshman year here at Baruch College. One of my concerns would be my ability to make my transition from High School to College soothly. Going to college after 4 years of high school is a big step and it has always been something I thought would be hard to deal with since there is a big difference in the amount of workload and time you receive in high school. A second concern I have is maintaining a good enough GPA to make it into the Zicklin School of Business. The business school here at Baruch is one of the major reasons I chose this school and a deep concern is being able to make it into Zicklin. My third concern is whether or not i’ll be able to handle the workload throughout my 4 years here. It is important for me to learn how to manage my time and complete all my work on time. If I can master that, it would make my time here at Baruch much easier. So far, one thing that makes my college experience different from my high school experience is the diverse culture in my surroundings. Being in a multi-cultural student body is a big advantage to have as a student. Becoming friends with differently culture people teaches you a lot about the world we live in and will always be good for you in the future. I think my first at college will change me in the sense that I will learn to be more responsible as a person and I will learn how to manage my time and work. It will allow me to get a better idea of how to balance personal life issues and school issues.
