Reflection

1- Tell us how your experience at Baruch College has lived up to your expectations? Not lived up to your expectations? Exceeded your expectations?

Baruch College has lived up to my expectations. Despite having some bad professors in the beginning shook up my confidence a bit. Regardless, I still believe that good and bad professors are part of every college. Therefore, my expectation is where it stands right now.

2- How well do you think your first semester at Baruch College went?

I think my first semester went on the right track. There could have been times where I could have gave a little more effort studying but now I do realize how much consideration I have to take to prepare for the next exam. Other than that, I made new friends in every class which is a big plus in my own grade book and bonded not only on school work, but also in reality.

3- What would you do differently during your first sememster if you could do it all over again?

Perhaps, I can do better the second time around knowing the full potential of what to expect and receive on how much work I put into. But because time does not stop for anyone, we all must move on whether or not we all did well.

4- How have you changed since you started at Baruch College?

My confidence has changed in a positive note. I realize I have to put in a lot more effort to my work to get a decent grade. My writing has improved gradually due to the demands of professors that require large amounts of written assignments. Not only the first two years are going to be involved with business, but a lot of writing, which tends to be one of my greatest weakness. Despite my weaknesses, I plan to keep on moving as well as improving on what I can do.

Community Service Self-Evaluation

  1. How did your community service work help the community? We encouraged people to keep walking rather than stopping to take pictures and stop the flow of the moving crowd.
  2. What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project? I was astonished. I did not like to participate, but I do have a good will, and it was mandatory so I had to take part of it.
  3. How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others? I feel like I played a part of society and even though it was minuscule, it was better than not being there.
  4. What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site? I learned that the world was a bitter place. I was stressed, ignored, tired and hungry as I was participating. Even though I was disappointed with what I experienced, it made the world a better place.
  5. What stands out as the best and/or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences? You have to be active in most aspects. You cannot just stand out there holding a sign without saying anything to the ones disobeying the signs. If no action is done, then things will get worse.
  6. How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society? It did not relate to my education as well as larger issues of society. Humans are humans and we all have flaws.
  7. How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session? Taking part involves huge responsibilities and I felt like I was not ready to take part of it.
  8. How has your community service experience changed your thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and community service work as a whole? I felt negative towards myself as each passing second went by. On the other hand, working together is what made things positive.
  9. How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself throughout this experience? The world is a mean place and I became convinced.
  10. Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or why not? No, the outcomes were different from what I have expected.
  11. Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not? Yes and no. I cannot determine my future because I have yet to experience more.
  12. Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-or two-sentence headline: Community service is great, but what you need to prepare is a strong will to participate. Together, we can make a world a better place.

Monologue

Many times throughout life, people asks intriguing questions. A simple question, “How do you identify yourself?” At first, the question seemed like a joke, but once you took it seriously, you had to give it a deep thought. As for me, I felt like I was the only one in the world who did not understand how to answer this question.

From the outside perspective, people can obviously tell that I am a big and tall Asian. “What kind of Asian?” Well, that is up to your intuition to decide; I got called from races I am not part of and even names that does not belong to me like David, Chris or Andrew, but I like jokes, so give it a crack! “Big and tall?” I cannot really answer to this question because I do not see the vision of other people’s view; you see me how your eyes see fit. However, I do gotta admit, my two senses, my sight and touch does not lie to me. My genes is what made up my body, and nurture gave me the nutrition to function and build physical strength.

My identity from the inside may or may not be surprising to some. In all integrity, I describe myself in the best way I see fit. For example, I am (or think I am) an outgoing person. Some may disagree with me and that is because when I have met them in the past, I was a shy person, really shy. Change is a commitment I decided to take as I moved on. When did this happen? My best answer would be the summer break before my senior year. What happened was my friend and I decided to “joke” around by having me sing because I wanted to get better at it. Ironically, singing does not fit into a shy person. I developed a stronger voice that can be heard unlike the voice that barely touched the listener’s soul, thus this transformation made me into an outgoing person. As for my intellect, I will not go there because everyone has or has potential of obtaining wisdom, hence it will not be a unique characteristic that differs me from other people.

This is who I am partially, meaning that the rest of the information is concealed due to publicity. For more information, please visit Kevin Lee and make sure that person is the one who wrote this monologue!

Who Do You Think You Are?

My mind sparks when someone asks me, “Who are you?” The conjuring image of myself pops up in my head. I am Kevin. Some people refer me as “Kevin Lee xD”. Yes, you heard right. How did I get that “xD”? It is a long story that takes place back at my second year in high school, Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, which is located in Bayside. I am currently a freshman in Bernard Baruch College. Aside from education history, I am a 6’0 Asian who enjoys many aspect of life. I like eating and I wont lie about it. I love hanging out with my friends. In general, I cannot judge my own character, it has to be the audience and how they characterize me by their point of view.

My top three concerns as a freshman are: time management, test preparations, and complex reading comprehension. First of all, time management is important because I am new to college and I want to end my first semester on a good note. I want to see how much time I will have before I make necessary adjustments. Secondly, I have not taken any tests yet and do not know what they will be like. Lastly, reading comprehension may sound silly, but I mean it as in philosophy. The books that I have to read is very complex and formatted in a way where it is hard to remember what I read, thus I forget. These are my concerns for my freshman year.

Baruch College is different in a way compared to high schools, therefore, it will be hard to compare these two. College is a place where it is the students who are in control of their classes, who they meet and what they do. It is not like high school, where it is mandatory and more structured. For example, you can decide if you want to add in breaks for college; while in high school, you have to attend all of your classes right after they finish. There is not much difference in my opinion, but you would feel more “freedom” in college.
The first year in college will not change me. There is not much things to say about this because I cannot be certain to what might change me.
