My Community Service Experience

Before I even knew community service was a requirement, i volunteered to go help on a day out with autistic children. The plan was that the kids and parents were going to meet the volunteers at a local bowling alley for a couple of games. The main point of this outing was to help the kids bowl, and get them away from their parents a little. The point was that WE should be the ones helping the kids, and let the parents sit back and relax. This was my first time dealing with autistic children so it was a handful at first. They don’t really have a regard for the right and wrong thing to do so they just do whatever they feel like, which ended up being annoying and cute at the same time. All the volunteers got assigned to a child and my child was a girl named Alyssa who was 5 years old. She was really cute, but i could tell right away that she wasn’t going to be easy to handle. She wanted to stay with her mother for the most part and didn’t really respond to me when I tried to talk to her. Finally, by the end of the game, I got her to take my hand and we bowled a pretty good shot together. Volunteering with autistic kids was a great experience. It helped me learn a lot about the disease but opened my eyes to the fact that just because a child is sick, doesn’t mean they’re not a child. They still like to laugh and play just like any other healthy kid. I’m really glad i volunteered my time to doing it.

Hi. This is Late, but this is me.

I know I’m writing this months after everyone else did, but better late than never right?

My name is Michelle Powerman and I was born and raised in Staten Island, New York. My mother is from Ukraine and my father is from Russia (both countries are now considered one), so that would make me Russian American. I speak Russian, but unfortunately not as fluently as I did when I was younger. I have an older sister named Susan who actually attended and graduated from Baruch College. She’s the main reason I decided on going here. She seemed to have a really great experience here at Baruch and that’s definitely what I wanted for myself as well. I speak fluently in sarcasm. 90% of everything I say is usually a joke and I love people with a sense of humor cause they understand my sarcasm. I love laughing and I love making other people laugh as well. A past time of mine is singing. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I record in my spare time (my YouTube channel is www.youtube.com/MichellePowerman if anyone wants to check it out) and it really serves as a stress-reliever. I don’t plan to make a career out of singing, so I’ll just leave it as a hobby for now.

So far, I love Baruch. I can’t put my finger on it but something about the energy of the school makes me not mind being here early just to chill out before class. It’s a big difference from high school but a good one. The only thing not so fun about college so far is the work load. I knew college would be hard, but I guess I wasn’t as prepared as I thought I was. Currently, I’m trying to work on my study habits and figure out how to kick my procrastination habit. I’ll definitely need to do that if I want to survive college. In all, I’m looking forward to the experience this school will bring me.

Michelle’s Monologue.

Due tomorrow? Do tomorrow. Due today? Do today.

This, unfortunately, is the story of my life.

Hello everyone. My name is Michelle Powerman and I am a chronic procrastinator.

Procrastinating is the act of putting things off that you have to do until the last possible minute, and I have been doing this for as long as I can remember.

Now, in high school I got away with it with no problem. I was lucky enough to do well in classes without ever actually opening a book to study. Homeworks were B.Sed right before class and still got full credit, and the best part was that my teachers had no idea.

This is no longer the case. I knew before I started college that  I had to change my study habits, but I never really thought about how to do that. Now that I have started college, it seems like the work just piles up by the second. This is a procrastinator’s worst nightmare.

It’s really sad how bad it’s gotten. You could put me in a room.

No windows, one door. Just walls.

You can give me a desk, chair, pen, paper and my assignment, and I will STILL manage to find something else more interesting to do rather than just complete the stupid assignment.

It’s a sickness really. Do you think people have considered making a cure for procrastination?

I blame facebook.

But then again, I can’t really blame facebook. It’s not TELLING me not to do my homework. It’s just another distraction.

I have to take control of this disease before it becomes my downfall.

With 4 years of college ahead of me, and maybe even Graduate school after that, there is no better or more crucial time to get rid of my procrastination once and for all.

Starting now, I will try my very best to complete or start my assignments on the evening that they are given, and not at 2AM or 10 minutes before class.

In addition, I vow to attempt studying DAYS in advance for exams, not (once again) at 2 AM or 10 minutes before class.

Things HAVE to and will change when it comes to my study habits.

The terrible disease of Procrastination may have tripped me up a bit, but it will not cripple me, I can promise you all that.
