Reflectioin

I thought Baruch was going to be a piece of cake because it was a CUNY and only the dumbest people of my school came here. I was wrong. Well even though it is not that hard, I still have to do some work and study for tests. I knew it was going to be boring because I commute there and back everyday. Hopefully after I join some clubs or find a job, it will not be so boring.
I think my first semester went okay, but not as well as I wanted. I did not really care or study at first because some classes were extremely boring. I learned to take notes better and study and write essays earlier.
I would bring my laptop to lectures everyday to keep me awake everyday if I had the chance to retake first semester of freshman year.
I have not really changed at all since the beginning of this semester.
Shoutout to Rawlisha and Toby for all the help they have given us!! :)

Community Service Self Evaluation

How did your community service work help the community?
I helped promote anti-smoking by asking people to sign petitions to not smoke and provide them with nicotine patches/gum. I also went around to many stores asking to put up a no-smoking sign and giving out brochures that informed people about cancer.
What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project?
It was actually my choice.
How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others?
It made me feel good because I might have added a few years to some people’s lives.
What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site?
Most people that do community service are nice. :)
What stands out as the best and/or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences?
It was great bonding with my fellow workers while doing community service. I learned that one person can make a change.
How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society?
The area I was walking around was filled with cigarette butts on the floor and a lot of people really do want to try to stop smoking, but it’s hard.
How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session?
I was basically out to do these services with only a few other people, so we took turns asking people which showed leadership.
How has your community service experience changed your thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and community service work as a whole?
After doing all this work, I really do care more about the community and smokers. It would be best to keep the ground and air clean, while saving people’s lives.
How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself throughout this experience?
I will try not to litter and whenever someone I know wants to quit smoking, I will tell them that it is free to get nicotine patches/gum.
Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or why not?
I was definitely satisfied with this experience overall. It was not only fun spending time with my workers, but also helpful to our community and citizens.
Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not?
Yes, because I want to help save people’s lives or at least add some years to their lives. Smoking not only harms the smoker, but also the people around him/her. It also looks good on my resume.
Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-or two-sentence headline:
Stop smoking

Monologue

My name is Randolph Chen, but all my friends and relatives call me Randy. I currently live in Rego Park, Queens and attend Baruch College like the rest of you. I am not completely sure yet what I am planning to major in, but it will probably be either accounting or finance since I love math and they are the most popular majors in this college. I know that in the future if I want to live a happy life, I definitely need to enjoy my job, but I heard that most accountants live a stressful life. That makes me think twice about being an accountant. What I do love to do is drive around though. Once I got my license, i just felt empowered to go anywhere and do anything I want! With my own car now, there are no limits to where I can go in this country. Recently, I have been dreaming about becoming a sports car racer, not the kind where you just race in circles because I find that pretty boring. It is a pretty big dream and does not sound realistic to me, but that’s just what I find very exciting. My dad’s a car mechanic so on weekends when I have nothing to do, I would go to his garage and help him out so he can teach me a thing or two. In the future, if I do not become a sports car racer, I wish to also have my own garage and just do tune-ups/upgrades on my car or any of my family or friend’s car.

Who I Am

My name is Randolph, but all my friends and relatives call me Randy. I currently live in Rego Park, but I spent a lot of time as a kid in Forest Hills. I participated a few years in each soccer, baseball, and basketball at the Forest Hills Little League. My dad always wanted me to be athletic and would always practice with me after coming home from work to improve my skills. Furthermore, I use to play handball after school often during my years in junior high school. After sophomore year in high school, I only played once in a while because of SATs, essays, and the college process. My dad owns a garage in Forest Hills where he fixes cars so I use to go there every weekend just to accompany him and learn a few things or two. My grandparents used to own a laundromat right behind my dad’s garage in Forest Hills too, but now they just rent it out. During my free time now, I just try to spend as much time with my friends as I could because I don’t see them everyday in school anymore as I did before.

The most important thing to me at Baruch College is to earn a very high GPA. High averages in junior high school and high school was just to get into a better school for the next few years, but I believe the grades in colleges are the most important because that is what can get you a job. The second most important thing is to get an internship because I don’t really have any real work experience; the only thing I have is volunteer work, but I really want to get out into the real world and do something adults do as a living. The third most important thing is to make friends and expand my connections. Having to commute from home to school and back everyday makes everything feel like high school again, and I feel like I will never have the real “college life.” Making connections in college is really important because you never know who can help you get an internship or even a job!

I can’t really imagine Baruch College experience being much different from my high school experience for now. I know there are frats out there, but I don’t think I will enjoy pledging for any of them. I hope I can get a very good internship or at least a job just for now.

I don’t think that my first year at Baruch College will change me much. I definitely am more independent though because professors will not care if you do not come to class or are not doing any of the homework so it is all up to me to work hard and do well in school.
