“reading parties M-F and we try to arrange them at 10am, 2pm and/or 4:40pm. “
“Our reading parties last about 1.5 hrs. We ask volunteers to arrive 15 minutes before the arrival time for the children. The children are coming from all over NYC and sometimes can be late so we usually aim for volunteers to take an hour and a half even though it can be less and the actual reading party lasts an hour. Our activity plan for the reading parties (subject to change) is as follows:
- Children arrive, greet volunteers
- Circle time: each person -child and adult- introduces themselves and says something about themselves (favorite color, animal, book, etc)
- After intros, a previously selected book is read as a group. Volunteers will read aloud and sometimes the children will too depending on age and shyness.
- Volunteers will buddy up with children (usually 1-2 children per adult, sometimes more) and read a book chosen by the child from our reading center library.
- Snack for the children provided
- To close the reading party, children will receive a pair of new PJ’s and a book. Children receive PJ’s per season thus, if a group of children come in Oct and then again in Nov, they will only get a new book in the latter.”
