Blog 5- 3rd Workshop

On Wednesday Dec. 7, I attended a workshop hosted by the STARR. The title of the workshop i attended was Writing Winning Resumes. Just like the title stated that is exactly what our instructors talked about, how to write and improve our resumes. At the beginning of the workshop the instructors went over the standard forms of resumes and what to do and not to do while writing a resume. She also went over a concept of a “fit” resume. That is the resume should be aligned with the type of job that your applying to. Shortly after, the instructors divided the class into small groups of four to  five students and had us do an exercise that required the use of proper language in order  to make our resumes as efficient as possible.

What i thought was the most interesting information was when our instructor told us that the email that you put on the resume should be professional. Although, it might seem like obvious information, it made me realize that the employers will be judging every aspect of you and even a childish email or a spelling error on your resume can cause you to lose a job.

Blog 4-Community Service

The way our community service helped our community was the walk helped not only to increase the awareness of the dangers and harms of lupus, but it also encouraged people to exercise.

My initial reactions to hearing that i would be engaging in an activity that would help our community was excitement. I was excited to be part of something bigger than myself and that I would have the opportunity to help out my community by giving something back.

Again spending time and energy felt good. It was nice to be doing something that not only I enjoyed, but also something i knew would better out community.

I learned that there are many people that would give a lot of their time and energy to do something they believe is right.

Well, the community service didn’t really change my way of thinking significantly, however it did help increase my aware of the importance of finding cure for lupus since it affects many lives.

The most important thing I learned throughout this community service was what lupus is, which is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissue.

Yes, I do see myself involved in the community because if i do so not only will it benefit the community, but it will also benefit me when i decide to look for a job i will be able to say that i gave back to the community.

On Oct. 22, my group went on a walk help by the The Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR), which is a national voluntary health organization based in New York City.

In my personal opinion I feel that my first semester in Baruch college went pretty badly. I feel that i was unable to successfully accomplish the goals  that i set in the beginning of the year such as getting good grades in class and getting to know many people. However, much to my dismal as the semester came to an end, I found that I was unsuccessful in both my goals of grade improvement and friend acquirement. And if I had the chance to do it all again things would’ve definitely improved. I would’ve study a lot more or a lot less since i would’ve known exactly what would be on the exams and there would no longer be any need to study, nevertheless if somehow i had the chance to do it all again i would not, because i feel that through my past mistakes future opportunities are created and because i made all these mistakes now I have the opportunity to do much better later.

Make the Right Choice

For many students college life can be a really frightening experience. However, on the other side of the coin it can also be the one of most rewarding and best experience in your life. For it is in college were you begin to explore who you really are and begin to express your opinions and views. But, nevertheless what I want to get across is regardless of how you view college, whether you find it exciting or scary in the end it is your own choices and decisions that shapes and forms the experiences that you have in college.

I remember my first few weeks in Baruch College how I made a promise to the  bronze statue of Bernard Baruch and to myself that I would do my best in order to excel in my school life and would try my very best to not commit the same grave errors that I did in high school. So far the only thing that I have excelled is in, finding out firsthand the difficulty in breaking a habit. Although I have not done the best that I could possibly do, I feel that it’s not the end of life for I know that the mistakes that I made today can be corrected by the success of tomorrow. Even though it sounds utterly ridiculous, I apologize to Mister Baruch using the words of Tyron Edwards- “Right actions in the future are the best apologies for bad actions in the past.”

With that said, hopefully I will able to learn from my mistakes and errors and try harder to make the right decisions. Whether it’s a small decision such as spending my time re-reading the work in order to better understand the material when I could’ve have spent it by playing computer games or eating. Or if it’s an important decision such as studying for a midterm or final instead of hanging out with friends or eating I could instead open up a textbook and start studying. Regardless of whether I make the right choice or not, all those decisions will shape and form my experiences in Baruch College.

First weeks of college

Since college experience is so much more different from high school experience and since you don’t know what to expect, it is only natural to develop concerns and worry.
In this new environment  where you are surrounded by strangers you can’t help but miss your friends from high school and miss the moments spent with them, so my primary concern is making friends. I fear that I won’t be able to make new friends in college the same way in high school because, in high school one can hang out with friends after class however in college all the classes are mixed up and most people work after school and therefore it is difficult to build a strong relationship with friends.
My second worry is since the quality and quantity of work received is so much more different from high school I feel like if I slack off I might do bad in class. With all the reading assignments and work that the professors give I cant help but feel nervous as to how I am going to survive. Since I suffer from severe procrastination I fear that all the reading assignments  and homework that I didn’t do to the last minute will come to haunt me later in  life in the form of a test paper. But I cant also help but feel excitement because of all the knowledge  that I will be receiving and all the new things I will be able to do.
Finally my last, but certainly not the least, but most likely the greatest worry that I have, is writing papers. Every time a professor tells me to write a writing assignment (which will be often) I start to break out in cold sweat, my heart starts to beat faster, and I can feel my blood pressure rising significantly. Well i might have over-exaggerated just a little bit, however that lurking fear of writing a paper is no exaggeration. However, I hope  that I’ll keep working hard to overcome my fear of writing a paper.
Even though I have many worries and concerns I will try my best to overcome them and make the most out of my college life.
———————————————————————————————
College life is very different in many ways from high school, whereas in high school the teaches would tell you how you are doing academically speaking and would scold you if you are doing bad in class. So with all these responsibilities that  college brings it’s no surprise that the first year of college will help better ones responsibilities and  maturity level. Therefore I hope that college will help be more responsible, by making sure that i take care of all my work before doing anything else and finishing assignments that the professors’ give on time.
