1- Tell us how your experience at Baruch College has lived up to your expectations? Not lived up to your expectations? Exceeded your expectations?
I didn’t think too much about it when I accepted to go to Baruch but I’m glad I did go. I always hear my friends complaining about their schools but I don’t have a lot of complaints for Baruch.

2- How well do you think your first semester at Baruch College went?
I think it went well, the teachers aren’t horrible and my grades aren’t a C average so I’m happy.

3- What would you do differently during your first sememster if you could do it all over again?
I would probably look at reviews and such for the class. It would make my life so much easier because then I would be more prepared.

4- How have you changed since you started at Baruch College?
I haven’t changed much except that I try a lot harder for my grades. That’s a good thing.

1) I wasn’t originally going to a different school, one with a campus and with students that have a completely different state of mind. Most importantly, it was REALLY expensive. So coming here,to a school that’s much cheaper, I didn’t have such great expectations. I was very surprised with how many things they offer here (writing center, sacc etc) and I am very satisfied.
2) I can’t really say because I haven’t gotten my grades yet, but I think it went fine. I could have put a little more effort into my work though. I met so many new people and I think that’s what made my experience so far a really good one.
3) I would definitely not procrastinate as much and go home straight after school instead of wasting time here. I would also take advantage more of everything the school had to offer me.
4) I think I’m a little less shy and way more open minded. Meeting all these people that are different than I am changed my view on the world. I also realized that you can’t bs your way through and get a good grade. Work must be done!

Reflection of First Semester

  1. 1)   Hmm, I would say Baruch met my expectations. Upon entering the first semester, I didn’t have much faith in the school to give me what I had always hoped for in a college experience. I had always intended to go away, and thus was not too happy to stay in the city. However, I knew it was a good school with a great reputation and aimed to make the very best of it. That being said, although Baruch has yet to become a place that I want to spend the next four years, it most certainly has impressed me. For the most part, I’ve enjoyed my classes and liked my teachers, and all in all, I’ve enjoyed the semester. Plus- you can’t help but love New York City.

    2)   Overall, I believe that I did pretty well in my first semester. I started off with five classes, and ended up dropping Calculus because I got the credit from high school (along with 14 others-yay). As for the rest of my classes, I feel like I’ve put in a lot of effort and my grades will reflect it. Anthropology is my favorite class, which I’m doing very well in, just like English. Although my English teacher is a bit of a hard ass at times, she means well, and I’ve done all I can to show her that I want to do well- hoping for an A- ! As for political science and philosophy, I don’t enjoy them as much as anthropology and English, mostly because they’re lecture halls and I tend to fall asleep. However, I still manage to do pretty well on the exams.

    3)   If I could re-do this semester, I would spend more time in the library after class rather than going home to do my work; since I commute, by the time I get home I’m tired and find it hard to concentrate and get stuff accomplished. Other than that, I would read more of my political science and philosophy articles, because it would make understanding the material much easier.

    4)  Since I’ve started a Baruch, I don’t think I have changed much as an individual, however, I have seen myself evolve into a better student. I always did pretty well in high school, but I feel like college has taught me how to better manage my time and made me more responsibility.

Reflection

1- Tell us how your experience at Baruch College has lived up to your expectations? Not lived up to your expectations? Exceeded your expectations?

Baruch College has lived up to my expectations. Despite having some bad professors in the beginning shook up my confidence a bit. Regardless, I still believe that good and bad professors are part of every college. Therefore, my expectation is where it stands right now.

2- How well do you think your first semester at Baruch College went?

I think my first semester went on the right track. There could have been times where I could have gave a little more effort studying but now I do realize how much consideration I have to take to prepare for the next exam. Other than that, I made new friends in every class which is a big plus in my own grade book and bonded not only on school work, but also in reality.

3- What would you do differently during your first sememster if you could do it all over again?

Perhaps, I can do better the second time around knowing the full potential of what to expect and receive on how much work I put into. But because time does not stop for anyone, we all must move on whether or not we all did well.

4- How have you changed since you started at Baruch College?

My confidence has changed in a positive note. I realize I have to put in a lot more effort to my work to get a decent grade. My writing has improved gradually due to the demands of professors that require large amounts of written assignments. Not only the first two years are going to be involved with business, but a lot of writing, which tends to be one of my greatest weakness. Despite my weaknesses, I plan to keep on moving as well as improving on what I can do.

Reflection of First Semester

My first semester at Baruch has been a roller-coaster ride. Somethings were good, some were bad. I liked some professors and some not so much. But I have experienced a world much different from high school. I never would have thought that college would be so different than the life I had been accustomed to.

Baruch has lived up to my expectations since I knew how diverse it was. Everyday I see new people and even people from different cultures and even continents. This helps me build social relations with different people and to get a better understanding of the world out the United States. Three day weekends really are great as I have time to hang out with friends and do my own hobbies. Choosing classes for yourself is also a good thing and being able to drop. I was pretty relieved that college wasn’t all about papers and tests, like I had heard from many people attending college.

Although college hasn’t been everything I wanted. It has not lived up to my expectations in the categories of lateness, getting to class, and how crowded it was. First, many professors don’t accept lateness, but many times lateness is caused by problems such as train delays, things we can’t control. I feel like we shouldn’t be accountable under these circumstances, but I do understand where professors are coming from. Another thing that failed my expectations was the elevators, most of the time they are always crowded and you’ll have to wait a while to use one. Also, most times people won’t hold the elevator for you when you are sprinting to get into one. It also wouldn’t be so bad if the escalators worked for a change. I really didn’t like that the door to freshman seminar was next to the broken escalator, as many people would use it and it would be pretty hard to enter the freshman room. Finally, the school it so crowded with many students, I didn’t expect there to be so many students. Usually during breaks there is no where to sit for lunch and the gym and computer labs are usually always full.

College has exceeded my expectations in the fact that most professors were pretty nice, nothing like what people had described them to be. They actually care about students and want them to succeed. In addition, I liked how there were so many clubs, one for everyone, and you even could make your own. Not to mention there are many programs to help students and to enhance student life. I also liked freshman seminar since it helped me think/enlighten me about college. I learned things such as how to make a schedule, requirements, and areas of the school such as the writing center. I also got very close to people in the seminar and I was very lucky to have it. I was also glad when we were told not to click drop classes when making a schedule on esims, since you would have to pay if you did. I’m pretty sure most of us would have done that so props to Toby Joseph.

My semester has gone pretty well at Baruch. Although I did have to drop a class, cause I wasn’t doing so well. This semester I’m getting mostly B’s. Though I didn’t really enjoy some of the classes. The experiences have been fun and club fairs were pretty nice. But there have been some bad moments such as I still don’t really know what I want to do, mainly what to major in. And paying bills for college and life away from parents is an intensive task. I think that the semester was pretty good since I was still getting used to college and adapting. I think my experiences are going to get better, but also harder at the same time since I’ve heard that freshman year is usually the easiest. But I can’t be for certain since I didn’t get most of the professors/classes I wanted while making my schedule. Getting the leftover classes after everyone else was done just really sucked and messed up any plans for a schedule.

The first thing I would have done differently would have been to drop classes that I knew I would come to loathe in the beginning of the semester and not have to suffer. If I could do anything differently during the 1st semester I probably would have studied harder and been more involved with class. I should not have saved work for the last minute and procrastinated. I would also have participated more in class and ask questions to get info on things I didn’t know and to get myself thinking.

To tell you the truth, I don’t think I have changed too much. I’m still the procrastinator and sleep lover I was in high school. Although I have skipped 1 or 2 classes, which is something I had never done previously in high school. But I do now understand that in order to succeed in life you have to work hard and that is what college has taught me.

Reflection – 12/5/11 – Phil Kubiak

College. It’s here, and the first semester is coming to an end. This is nuts.

Baruch College is not quite what I thought it would be, but who knows if it’s in a bad or good way? So what if its not 100% what I expected, its important that I’m here and I’m doing my work and I’m getting an education from a reputable school, and for that reason, I am just fine here at Baruch. The city is great, too. It never gets old.

My first semester at Baruch College went pretty well academically, maybe not as well as I wanted it to go but there is room for improvement. I definitely learned A LOT about how to manage my time in college this first semester. I learned A LOT about what I have to do to do well in certain classes. I haven’t done all of this my first semester, but that’s why I’m really looking forward to getting my finals done with, having a long break, and getting a fresh start next semester.

If I could do it all over again, I would read more of the assigned reading in my classes. I barely ever read anything at home. In hindsight, this was a big mistake. Class isn’t just about taking notes, you have to get involved and make yourself well known to the teacher. And it is a lot easier to study for tests when you have actually read what it is going to be about, rather than cramming the notes you have copied without actually understanding what they mean. These are all lessons I will use to my advantage next semester.

I don’t think I have changed all that much from my first semester at Baruch. I am still the same person. One thing that has changed for me is that by living alone, I am now more independent. I have gone through many weeks without seeing or even hearing from my parents, whom I used to see everyday back in high school days. Also, I’ve always hung around the city so I always knew it pretty well, but living in it has been an awesome experience and I learn more and more about it everyday.

Reflection

1- This place is pretty cool. It didn’t really exceed expectation, maybe met them. EVerything except for English. That class is gonna kill me. And probably everyone else. God, it sucks.

2- It was all right. Grades… meh. I;m still being lazy and stuff, so yeah.

3- Actually study, maybe? Besides that, nothing really. It’s been a lot of fun.

4- Not really changed. I’ve made a lot of friends this, and I’ve become a little more social and patient. Yeah.

1. My experience at Baruch College lived up to my expectations. I went to Bronx Science which was one of the hardest years of my life. Thank god i graduated because college is way easier.
2. My semester went okay. English sucks but I’ll pass.
3. I would cut class more….no, seriously i would learn to take class more seriously. Maybe i might not have dropped out of calculus.
4. My sense of direction is better. I used to get lost because I didn’t know what train or bus to take. This didn’t happen this year.

Reflection of First Semester

My experiences at  Baruch College was very memorable. Transitioning from high school to college, i was very worried that i wouldn’t be able to keep up with the cultural norm. Believe it or not, Baruch College is very competitive compared to all the other CUNY’s. It was hard in the beginning because everything was so new, but it was fun in the long run. I have learned so many things both in and out of class. I became a more sociable person and i learned a great deal in class. Not to be a nerd, but one of my passions is learning. I love retaining information and randomly spuing it out loud when the time comes. It has definitely exceeded my expectation and prepped me for the outside world. I didn’t thin Baruch had so much to offer to their students. With all the free computer software down to the renting of laptops, helped me understand that Baruch College was for me not against me (Like most high schools) My first semester went very well. I tried my est in every class, except writing because it’s impossible to do well in the class. I met a lot of friends, or even acquaintances. If i can do it all over again, i would definitely drop English. That class has screwed me over and really discouraged me to write. Setting limitations and boundaries to my own style of writing. In the end, i have definitively changed into a more mature person. Being able to be more depended on my own and prioritizing my goals, it has been a very interesting semester. Because i get to choose my classes next semester, it will be more pleasant then this one.

Reflection

1) Entering Baruch, I was a little bit nervous and scared. I felt like it was going to be one of the hardest years of my life academically. But it turned out to be quite the opposite. I had a lot of a fun in this first semester. It wasn’t as difficult as I expected it to be.

2) I think my first semester in Baruch went very well. I earned good grades. I met many new friends. I learned a lot. I got a good understanding of what my remaining three and a half years here will present me.

3) One thing I would do differently in my first semester would be not being lazy and not leaving my work till the last minute. Late nights in college are horrible. I’ve learned to do anything in my power to stay away from them.

4) Every since I started Baruch, I’ve gained much more knowledge from my academic studies. In the past, my studies didn’t really have to do with current day life. But in college, seeing everything apply to daily life makes it very helpful.
