A) Tell us how your experience at Baruch College has lived up to your expectations? Not lived up to your expectations? exceeded your expectations?

-My experience has somewhat lived up to my expectations being that it is more work than it was in high school and that it what I expected.

B) How well do you think your first semester at Baruch College went?

My first semester at Baruch was okay. I was keeping up with the work at first and sort of slacked off towards the end but I’m sure I’ll do better next semester being that  I know what to expect.

C) What would you do differently during your first semester if you could do it all again?

-I  would of taken my school work and academics more serious and work harder on assignments. I would of actually studied for certain things and not procrastinate.

D) How have you changed since you started at Baruch College?

-I’m probably more responsible and disciplined being that I have more things to worry about and responsibilities.

Community Service

1) How did your community service work help the community?

I went with my family and two friends on Thanksgiving to deliver home cooked thanksgiving meals to the firefighters working in our community.

2) What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project?

At first i wasnt excited about it at all. I thought it was a nice idea to give the firefighters food because they were working and could not have their own thanksgiving meals with their families, but I did not want to part take, I would rather stay home and spend the day at my own house.

3) How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others?

Once I was at the fire station and saw the reactions of the firefighters and how grateful they were, I felt great too. I no longer cared that I wasn’t sitting in my own house and felt good about myself to make their job of working during the holiday easier.

4) What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site?

I learned that I should not be selfish, and that I enjoy giving my time to others more than I thought i did. I learned that the people i was with, including my siblings and two friends have great hearts and even my ten year old sister enjoys not being selfish. I learned that the firefighters are the least selfish people, because not only do they also spend their time saving others, but they risk their lives for it as well.

5) What stands out as the best/ or most trying experiences that occured while engaging in your community service?

What stands out the most was the reaction of the fire fighters when they saw the food that we brought them, and how thankful they were for our kind gesture.

6) How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society?

Engaging in this project made me realize how special the firefighters are in our society and how we should appreciate them more.

7) How did your experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session?

My experience related very much to that session, because the firfighters are the perfect examples of leaders and service. They dedicate their lives to serve as leaders in our community and serve to the people by saving them when they need help.

8 ) How has your community service experience changed your attitude, thinking, and actions towards yourself, others, the community, and community service work as a whole?

It changed my attitude and thinking a lot by converting the community service work as a whole from an annoying and time consuming one, into a heart filled and special one. It made me realize that doing community service doesnt only benefit the ones that you are trying to help, but it benefits you as well.

9) How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself through this experience?

It impacted me personally because i felt much better about myself after I participated in this project. I learned that although I may think that i  enjoy being selfish more and worrying about myself, I really enjoyed caring for others and that made me even happier than worrying about myself.

10) Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or Why not?

I was definitely satisfied, and I think that the firefighters were as well.

11) Do you see yourself staying involved in community service during your college and adult years? Why or Why not?

I definitely want to stay involved and will make time for it, because it made me happy and made my day better as well as helping others.

12) Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-two sentence headline.

“Being Selfish is overrated: Helping others isn’t.”

a. Tell us how your experience at Baruch College has lived up to your expectations? Not lived up to your expectations? Exceeded your expectations?

My experience at Baruch College has somewhat lived up to my expectations. Coming from a suburban area I enjoy the atmosphere and the vibe that New York City gives. I am a big fan of basketball in general so I was a little disappointed with the amount of school spirit that the school had. I also don’t like how the administration forces students to par take in classes that the students clearly have no interest in.

b. How well do you think your first semester at Baruch College went?

My first semester at Baruch College did not go as well as I planned. As I started to live away from home I picked up pretty bad sleeping habits and barely studied. But besides that I made new friends and I started to get used to the NY atmosphere.

c. What would you do differently during your first semester if you could do it all again?

I would use my time more wisely, and just stay up on of everything.

d. How have you changed since you started at Baruch College?

I don’t feel like I have really changed since this is only my first semester of school. I feel the same as I have ever been.

Sidney Mishkin Gallery

I’m kind of late with this but it’s ok. Last week I went to the Sidney Mishkin Gallery again. Last time I went with my english class and as last time it wasn’t like crazy interesting or anything special. Last time it was just a bunch of pictures and same this time. The lady at the place just gave me and kris the little postcard paper thing. I wasn’t too amazed at the pictures. It seemed as though Milt Hinton just followed all of the musicians during the Harlem Renaissance when Jazz was poppin’ (It’s still poppin’ now).  I liked the descriptions for the pictures. Each picture could tell it’s own story. I felt like I was going through the jazz period myself just by reading the stories, but obviously I wasn’t. We just kept walking around and kept looking at the pictures. I loved how everyone was usually smiling and having a great time even though there was still a lot of segregation. A lot of the pictures always alluded to segregation between whites and blacks. The jazz players kind of smiled and laughed about it instead. They were just doing their thing and bringing people together through  music. I like how Milt Hinton captured all of it in the moment and in all of those places. He was really capturing the essence of the jazz age and you don’t mess with the jazz age, cause jazz is part of New York.

It was pretty cool how he got to go around with all of these musicians and just take photos of them. He became friends with a bunch of cool jazz musicians. Let me see one of you mofos do that. He traveled everywhere from New York to Tokyo. During that time,The Great Depression, people wouldn’t even be leaving their homes, Milt was going all over the world taking photos.

I would really love to do that, but one I’m not an awesome photographer, and two…don’t really know that many talented people to follow around. I would use him as an example in life though. He did what he loved, even when times were tough and work was hard to find. He did things differently.

It’s fun seeing the pictures cause you can put yourself in that position or that point in time rather than just reading about the Jazz age from a textbook. That would be boring and you would get the wrong idea about it. It’s great that Milt Hilton captured all of the pictures how he did. It really points out the joy and happiness music brought to the musicians and to the people. I can relate to that cause music is very universal and it really does bring people together and it can seriously depict a point in time.

Overall it was a good experience going to the gallery again and seeing all the photographs. I wouldn’t mind doing it again. It really lets you think about that time, but maybe another type of exhibit  to mix things up.

A) Tell us how your experience at Baruch College has lived up to your expectations? Not lived up to your expectations? exceeded your expectations?

My experience at Baruch so far has lived up to my expectations. That is kind of easy for me to say because i didn’t have many expectations coming in. I assumed from what I heard from other Baruch students that it wouldn’t be so hard, I would be in and out all day, and i would hopefully enjoy my classes. I was more excited about moving to the city and living with two of my best friends from High School in an apartment near school. I did enjoy my first semester and made new friends and enjoyed some of the classes, and for the most part were not very hard.

B) How well do you think your first semester at Baruch College went?

I think it went pretty well. considering it was my first semester and I was adjusting to the school and teachers and fulfilling the work requirements at the same time, overall I did a pretty good job, and towards the end of the semester I got more used to it and comfortable here.

C) What would you do differently during your first semester if you could do it all again?

If i could i would have studied more in the beginning of the semester for Art History and Psych… thats about it, and tried being on time more often..

D) How have you changed since you started at Baruch College?

I think I became a little more outgoing and less shy in my classes than i used to be. I used to be afraid to voice my opinion more and speak in front of the class but I got a lot more comfortable doing that since the beginning of the semester.

Third Blog Post

Starting college at first was boring. I would go to school and only think about what should I do after school. We would get piles of homework that I would blow off until the last minute. Professors weren’t as great as i thought them to be. But that is all in the past. Reflecting on my first semester, Baruch College did fail at fulfilling to my expectations because i thought college would be a more laid back just like in movies. But apparently, it does not exist. Though i thought that college was laid back, i still got a lot of homework to do. There were tests every 2-3 weeks. The tests were the only thing that really bothered me. I thought it would be just writing papers as our finals, but we actually had to study. Having this mindset really dropped my grades in most classes. What did live up to my expectations is that even though we had all this work to do. We still had some free time. I had three hour breaks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays which was a pain and a blessing. Even though there are more cons then pros, college is still kind of cool.

I felt as if my first semester in college could have been better. I was still used to the high school style of doing things where I could wait until the last day to do my projects and papers. In college it was a bit harder to do it just because things were lengthier. I think that going to college is where I have slept the most in class, just because i know the professor does not care that much. I got to know new people and I became close to one too.

What I would have done differently is that maybe I would have studied a bit more. Instead of procrastinating and waited until the night of the test to study. I wished that I did that instead of just relaxing. I got really bad grades, well at least in my standards. I wished that I did not sleep that much in class or to actually read the pages that were given to us every day. There are a lot of things that I wish I could redo but now that the semester is over, I have to face finals that I should have been studying for the whole semester.

How I have changed is that I am starting to think literally and now I am starting to see the importance of studying before hand. College has changed the way it think now and I think that I would be ready to get higher grades now in college. I am now accustomed to the way college works and i feel like now i can actually do well in it. I think that college also has given me more confidence in myself even though nothing happened to make me feel this way.

Well, this is everything about my first semester here at Baruch College.

Monologue

“Sigh, yet another night that u stay up to 2 o’ clock doing my homework. I don’t get why we are even given homework when the majority of the time, the professor gives lectures?
<phone call: “What! We have another test!? And an essay due on the same day! Argh, thanks.>

College really is a pain. So many more responsibilities that i have to do. For one thing, the professors think we are robots and do nothing but homework. But then again i don’t manage my time wisely. The time i spent last night doing my homework, i spent twice that amount playing games and relaxing. And tests? (laugh) But then again it’s not a laughing matter. I need to start studying. I need to get good grades.

This is too stressful, I need to change. No longer am i able to afford low grades on my tests. No longer am i able to tolerate late nights. No longer am i able to convince myself that everything is going to be fine. I have made many resolutions in my past about changing. TO study more, and don’t procrastinate. But i always ignore it in the end. Maybe its about time I followed it. Change myself to be more studious and maybe I can get others to join me and as a group, survive college. People may ask who am I to make such a claim. Well…

I am a leader, an advice giver, a friend a giver, a procrastinator, a failure. NO!! I need to be positive! I can do this, I can survive this dungeon called College.
