The Student Guide to Learning offers students strategies to chart a learning path, plan out their study and coursework, and maximize the time they spend “in school” (whether on or off campus). It also guides students in ways to reduce the anxieties of coursework or class time, while fostering habits of mind and body that make the learning process more fulfilling. In this 1-hour workshop, the authors of the Student Learning Guide will give a tour of the guide and model ways to incorporate it into your courses. We will also consider other resources available to students at Baruch and CUNY.

Misinformation campaigns online have become increasingly savvy at presenting themselves as legitimate and preying up readers’ emotional reactions to sensational material. In this 1-hour workshop, CTL staff members will discuss trends in how students process the news and will look at examples of some common ways that misleading or misinformative sources manifest false impressions of credibility.. Together, we will reflect on some strategies for communicating with students about sources and brainstorm approaches, activities, and tools that might work in fostering information literacy skills across all disciplines.

The CTL’s Active Learning Strategies repository is a website full of descriptions of ready-to-go active learning techniques designed to be used in classes across the disciplines. In this repository you’ll find resources for collaborative problem solving, class discussions, debates, role playing, reflective activities, teaching with games, peer-to-peer instruction, and writing-to-learn. In this 1-hour workshop, CTL staff will give a tour of the Active Learning Repository and model ways to incorporate it into your courses. We will also discuss active learning strategies that may or may not be working in our classrooms, or ones that you’d like to try out.

Prior to the pandemic, the Baruch Center for Teaching and Learning had a guide for students that focused on administrative topics and assumed a physical campus where students could access resources and community.
