Community Service Self-Evaluation
1.) My community service required me to teach SHSAT math to middle school students. 2.) I was very against the idea of community service because being president of Key Club, i had to provide service to the community through out my whole senior year. 3.) It made me feel good because i was able to raise SHSAT scores for students, in order to get into the the specialized high schools. 4.) I learned that i don’t have patience for kids, students were very distracted and 180 Scholarship is legitimate. 5.) What stands out to me the most was when 180 Scholarship went on a field trip to the MET. I learned that students had the ability to appreciate art, including myself. 6.) Engaging in the community opened my eyes o what the middle schools weren’t teaching and how messed up our education system was. 7.) It did not relate to the Leadership and Service Session. 8.) It has turned my thinking upside down, it help me see why kids were getting so stupid in America. 9.) I have developed a close relationship with my students and it help me learn that you can never judge a book by its cover. 10.) I was satisfied because the investment i put into students was worth wild. i was a significance in their lives. 11.) No because i am very introverted. 12.) 180 Scholarship help me see a different picture in kids. Students are really in need of a better education and this institution is the place to be.

Community Service Self-Evaluation
- How did your community service work help the community? Supporting the walkers in the Light the Night walk helped get the word out about the fight against Leukemia around South Street and in the surrounding community.
- What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project? I was gung-ho from the start because I’ve been engaging in community service for years. During my time in Student Government I’ve participated in countless fundraisers and service opportunities.
- How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others? I felt good, because what I was doing was helping those in need.
- What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site? I learned that doing good things for other people, no matter how small, makes a big difference. I also learned that other people are willing to come together to unite against a serious illness, and that the Seaport is a interesting area.
- What stands out as the best and/or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences? The best experience that occurred was seeing the first group of walkers round the halfway point on the Brooklyn bridge still eager to complete the rest of the distance. I learned that people can put the cause ahead of physical limitations.
- How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society? Engaging in this project was a unified experience with my Freshman Orientation class, so it was directly related to my education.
- How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session? My community service experience exemplified that to be a leader you have to first serve the community around you.
- How has your community service experience changed your thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and community service work as a whole? - Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or why not? I was satisfied because it was great to be on the beautiful Brooklyn bridge seeing people walk for a cause.
- Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not? I see myself undertaking much more service, especially to help the many poor and disadvantaged people of New York City.
- Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-or two-sentence headline: We walk together as one. We walk for a cure.

Community Service Self Evaluation
How did your community service work help the community?
I helped promote anti-smoking by asking people to sign petitions to not smoke and provide them with nicotine patches/gum. I also went around to many stores asking to put up a no-smoking sign and giving out brochures that informed people about cancer.
What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project?
It was actually my choice.
How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others?
It made me feel good because I might have added a few years to some people’s lives.
What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site?
Most people that do community service are nice.
What stands out as the best and/or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences?
It was great bonding with my fellow workers while doing community service. I learned that one person can make a change.
How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society?
The area I was walking around was filled with cigarette butts on the floor and a lot of people really do want to try to stop smoking, but it’s hard.
How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session?
I was basically out to do these services with only a few other people, so we took turns asking people which showed leadership.
How has your community service experience changed your thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and community service work as a whole?
After doing all this work, I really do care more about the community and smokers. It would be best to keep the ground and air clean, while saving people’s lives.
How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself throughout this experience?
I will try not to litter and whenever someone I know wants to quit smoking, I will tell them that it is free to get nicotine patches/gum.
Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or why not?
I was definitely satisfied with this experience overall. It was not only fun spending time with my workers, but also helpful to our community and citizens.
Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not?
Yes, because I want to help save people’s lives or at least add some years to their lives. Smoking not only harms the smoker, but also the people around him/her. It also looks good on my resume.
Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-or two-sentence headline:
Stop smoking

1. It helped people keep going in a straight line. For most people. Some people were just plain dumb. 2. Bummed. Didn't want to waste my time. Test the next morning. Not very excited. 3. Good. But my help was kind of stupid. 4. People are really stupid, but kind of funny. 5. I had fun yelling at people to take as many pictures as possible, and also became a model in the process and took like mad pictures with people. 6. It helps me pass Freshmen Seminar. Score! 7. I guess it made me take charge and tell people what to do. So Leadership and Service, yeah. 8. People are really stupid. You got to yell and tell them what to do or they won't understand. 9. It made me spend all night staying up stufyin for a test. Not fun. 10. I guess. We got free food. So it was OK. 11. As long as there's food, sure I guess. 12. Don't yell too much waving a sign or you'll lose your voice out there. And have fun! Yeah, that's it.

I was excited because I have always done some form of service to others
How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others?
I felt proud and honored to help others.
What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site?
I learned that organizing a service event on such a grand scale is very complicated and requires many volunteers and helpers.
What stands out as the best and/or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences?
I mostly enjoyed seeing the happiness in the walkers faces when they reached the us on the bridge. They felt that they had made a real accomplishment.

This project taught me that even the simplest of events couldn’t be accomplished without the help of volunteers.
How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session?
Once divided into groups, we had to follow specific instructions in order to preform the requested service. This shows both leadership and service.

This community service taught me to be more humble, and that I should truly dedicate my time to the community.
How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself throughout this experience?
I learned that I should value my community and the people within it. The is because nothing would be in existence if someone had not provided service to assist.

Although It was a long a tiring night, spending it with my friends and fellow new Yorkers made it worth it.
Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not?
Yes I do, because I truely enjoyed it.
Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-or two-sentence headline:
The finish line is at city hall.

Community Service Self-Evaluation
- How did your community service work help the community? We encouraged people to keep walking rather than stopping to take pictures and stop the flow of the moving crowd.
- What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project? I was astonished. I did not like to participate, but I do have a good will, and it was mandatory so I had to take part of it.
- How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others? I feel like I played a part of society and even though it was minuscule, it was better than not being there.
- What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site? I learned that the world was a bitter place. I was stressed, ignored, tired and hungry as I was participating. Even though I was disappointed with what I experienced, it made the world a better place.
- What stands out as the best and/or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences? You have to be active in most aspects. You cannot just stand out there holding a sign without saying anything to the ones disobeying the signs. If no action is done, then things will get worse.
- How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society? It did not relate to my education as well as larger issues of society. Humans are humans and we all have flaws.
- How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session? Taking part involves huge responsibilities and I felt like I was not ready to take part of it.
- How has your community service experience changed your thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and community service work as a whole? I felt negative towards myself as each passing second went by. On the other hand, working together is what made things positive.
- How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself throughout this experience? The world is a mean place and I became convinced.
- Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or why not? No, the outcomes were different from what I have expected.
- Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not? Yes and no. I cannot determine my future because I have yet to experience more.
- Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-or two-sentence headline: Community service is great, but what you need to prepare is a strong will to participate. Together, we can make a world a better place.

Community Service Self-Evaluation
1. How did your community service work help the community?
My community service helped the community by organizing and leading people during the walk. It was my job to make sure people didn’t stop and take pictures and stop to take pictures or distract the runners.
2. What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you would be engaging in a community service project?
At first, I was really bummed because we would be out late. It made it worse that it would be a few hours long. I was still new to living in the city and didn’t really know how to get home. Not to mention, I had a test the next day.
3. How did it make you feel to give your time and energy to others?
It felt pretty good knowing that you were doing things for others. It made me happy meeting all kinds of people in the process. In addition, I thought it was a really good cause and was happy that I could add to it.
4. What did you learn about yourself, the people around you, and the service site?
What I learned about myself was that I was not a good people person. The people around were very diverse, some from Spain, and others we quick to share their political views. I learned just how diverse the people in the city really were. The service site was much different than I expected as I was told that it was at Seaport, but we switch to the Brooklyn Bridge, which was way longer than I thought.
5. What stands out as the best and/or most trying experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service project? What did you learn from these experiences?
The experiences that stood out were people asking to take photos with us (the sign holders). Also, when we got into a debate with an older man about our political beliefs. I learned that these types of events can really make people meet others and that sometimes people challenge what you believe in and that you just have to remain calm, in order not to get into an argument with them.
6. How did engaging in this project relate to your education and the larger issues in society?
The project related to my education because part of my education is learning to socialize. Relating to a larger issue, this project relates to diversity and understanding people with different cultures/beliefs because many people there were foreign and thus did not understand the customs nor English.
7. How did your community service experience relate to the “Leadership and Service” session?
It relates since we had to be confident and loud when we were speaking to the bystanders. We literally had to lead the people the right way and instruct them in what to do.
8. How has your community service experience changed your thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community, and the community service work as a whole?
I think that people should do community service not be it is the right thing to do but we can benefit so much from it self such as getting a better sense of ourselves and meeting new people. I’ve learned to respect myself and others by helping and engaging in these activities because I feel as if I’ll grow as a person. I see community service differently, not as a time when students are force to do these, but a time when people can help/understand each-other.
9. How has your community service experience impacted you personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself throughout this experience?
This community service has changed how I feel, I realized that I could actually do something instead of being powerless. My act, even though so small, brought much people happiness. I learned that I like making others happy and feel good about themslves.
10. Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or why not?
Yes, I was very satisfied with my experience since I got to help people, meet others, and maintain order. Although I was disappointed that we would get home late and have to take a test in the morning. I was also bummed that most of our class didn’t show up.
11. Do you see yourself staying involved in the community during your college and adult years? Why or why not?
I will still be involved in the community because there are so much benefits for doing so. I can help others and not to mention build a resume. Talk about killing two birds with one stone. I see this as a win-win for everybody and see no reason to stop.
12. Sum up your service-learning experience in a one or two sentence headline:
People did not understand why not to take pictures and others walked the walk for a good cause.

Community Service
- How did your community service work help the community?
My service helped the community by providing basic foods for those who
have trouble getting it for themselves. - What were your initial reactions upon hearing that you
would be engaging in a community service project? It wasn’t something so
crazy because I was used to doing this from high school. We needed a
certain amount of hours to graduate, and so we did similar things. - How did it make you feel to give your time and energy
to others? It felt really great and that it was all worth it once you saw
their reactions and realized you’re really helping not just wasting your
time. - What did you learn about yourself, the people around
you, and the service site? I’ve known this organization for my whole life and
what I love about it is that they will go completely out of their way to
help someone. I know so many people there who volunteer for hours every
week and I learned that I can do that as well if I tried. - What stands out as the best and/or most trying
experiences that occurred while engaging in your community service
project? What did you learn from these experiences? The most important
thing I learned is to appreciate my life and realize how fortunate I am
and I saw this when I got to look at how others live. However, it’s not
important just to appreciate but to also reach out because of those
feelings. - How did engaging in this project relate to your
education and the larger issues in society? I just saw how people do
really live on different ends of the spectrum. I always hear it but now I was
able to experience it in a way. - How did your community service experience relate to the
“Leadership and Service” session? It really takes a leader to take away
time from their everyday life and help others. Not everyone is willing to
do it. - How has your community service experience changed your
thinking, attitudes, and actions towards others, yourself, the community,
and community service work as a whole? Every time I feel like complaining
about how bad my life is I keep going back in my mind to the people who
are struggling with providing food for their children and I see that that’s
a real struggle- not mine. - How has your community service experience impacted you
personally? What is the most important thing you learned about yourself
throughout this experience? There was one family we delivered to that was
comprised of a single mother a three kids. I remember seeing the youngest
girl’s face light up and I also realized that one tiny action you think doesn’t
really do much can affect much more than you think. - Were you satisfied with your experience overall? Why or
why not? Yes. Why wouldn’t I be? - Do you see yourself staying involved in the community
during your college and adult years? Why or why not? Definitely especially
in my community since there are opportunities every single day and they
deserve it, me giving back. - Sum up your service-learning experience in a one-or
two-sentence headline: I know that I can make a difference.
