Project 1: Rhetorical Analysis of a Cultural Artifact

(12% class grade)

Rhetorical analysis of a particular artifact of any genre that discuss a specific subtopic of the group topic body. Each student identifies one piece of media that they will analyze. (final running word count: min 1,250 words)

Choose and analyze a cultural artifact that you remember and feel strongly about—one that may have directly or indirectly influenced your perceptions of the world and/or yourself.

Utilize the skills of rhetorical analysis in your response, including:

  • Historical and cultural context
  • The rhetorical conventions of style, tropes, genre, audience, and purpose
  • Medium and genre, and its discourse
  • Kairos (timeliness) and exigence (the impetus for the piece to be made in the first place)
Grading Criteria:

Three points (3%) each:

  1. Submit all writing on time (for Sept. 24-26 (proposal), Oct. 1 (750 words), and Oct. 10 (1,250 words) deadlines).
  2. Meet minimum length requirements.
  3. Directly analyze at least one piece of media.
  4. Complete and attend peer review.

Timeline:

  • Bring a 250 word proposal to our individual conferences next week (2 copies, for me and you)
  • 750 words and copies for your group on Monday, October 1
  • Peer review Wednesday, October 3
  • 1,250 words (final draft) on Wednesday, October 10
