Notes

Note #1: The first note compares robbing a person’s language to war. This opening quote allows the reader to understand what the rest of the text will most likely be. It allows the reader to stop and think about everything they have learned about language, and every time someone told them to not speak their native of second language. This opens the eyes of many people and really allows them to understand that robbing a person of their language is more violent than war.

Note #5: The fifth note talks about the shift between ll to y and z to s. This shows how even though they roughly all speak one language they have differences that only they understand. A statement like this really adds to the text because it makes it more personal on a certain level. It gives the reader a chance to connect because in our languages different groups of people pronounce words in different ways. Also, in the case for many people who speak a second language they can relate because people around the world who speak that language use different letter or different pronunciations.

Note #6: In the sixth note is states, “But for a language to stay alive it must be used.” Most people know how the Latin language and Yiddish, are pretty much dead languages because people stopped using them. We also now know from this text that a few languages she had used she forgot because she stopped using them. this piece if information brings the reader to understand that any language can disappear and you would have to learn a new one to understand the people around you. It allows her to amplify the points she is making in the texts, of how the Spanish language will soon be a dead language because she and her family and friends are forced to only speak English, and get rid of their accents.

Note #7: Note seven refers to the prior statement she had made. It says that she will be heard, that all of her voices will be heard and she will stop silencing herself. This note shows how she is done fitting in with the normal standards, and she will not listen to the people who tell her to only speak English. It also allows her to relate to all the women reading the text because women speak in code. Even though it may not be a series of code words and phrases, but a mindset where what a women says must be fit for a women, it shows that all women think alike and need to break out of speaking in code.
