Introduction
Taking sips of Jack Daniels Whiskey, I felt nothing but despair. I was drowning in my own tears of sorrows thinking about what I did wrong. What did I do in my life to deserve this? I had told the girl that I thought was the love of my life how I had felt and the only response I got back was a texting bubble. I was sitting in my room feeling emptiness all around me, all alone. I tried to process what happened, but I was in denial. I couldn’t believe that I actually got rejected. In the background, I had “Marvin’s Room” playing. It was my go-to “bag” song. I was trying to listen to the song and slowly it seemed to help.
Abstract
Music regulation is a process in which the negative emotions of a person is managed into more positive emotions. There is a strong correlation between music and mood regulation. Music has been shown to be effective to regulate moods and help when a person is feeling upset or depressed. In the first section, I spoke about how about how Drake’s song, “Marvin’s Room,” is a commentary on how a person copes with depression through drugs and alcohol. Drake uses a situation that people have encountered with where they use drugs or alcohol to cope with a difficult situation. When the listener listens to the lyrics, they are able to see how drugs and alcohol is not a viable way to cope with depression. It allows listeners who are feeling upset or depressed to evaluate their current situation and help overcome the situation. In the second section, I presented a personal narrative of a time where I was feeling depressed after a heartbreak and how “Marvin’s Room” helped me cope with it. After the heartbreak, I began to consume alcohol and thought it was the best way to help get over the heartbreak. However, listening to “Marvin’s Room” allowed me to overcome the situation and realize that alcohol was not the best way to handle the situation. In the third section, I researched how music is used — in the general sense — as a treatment that helps with mood regulation for mental and emotional disorders. Through the research, I was able to conclude that music has a strong correlation in the use of mood regulation.
