Hello everyone! My name is Dylan Rutkowska. Today I will be talking to you about my semester-long writing.
Intro & Abstract
Intro:
“I didn’t understand what they found so fun about that. It could lead to cancer, right? When they started taking drags, I dapped them up, told them I had to go because I had to be home, and I left. As much of a follower I was, I wasn’t sure that was the new trend – at least not for me.” This is an excerpt from my Part 2, in which I connect my themes from Part 1 to a personal experience.
Abstract:
In Unit 1, or the first part of my paper, I wrote a rhetorical analysis about the film, A Bronx Tale. I analyzed the film through its many themes as well as touched upon its impact on my life. The prominent theme I came out with was “the choices an individual makes can change their life forever The purpose of this part was to identify and analyze an artifact (in my case a movie) which influenced my perception of the world. To analyze the film I took the many themes and discussed their prevalence throughout the movie, and in a specific scene. I ended Part 1 with the movie’s lasting effects on my perception of the world. In Part 2, I wrote about a story from middle school. This story intercorrelated with many themes from A Bronx Tale. The story was about a time when I declined a cigarette – despite peer pressure – when hanging out with friends after school one day. For part 3, I formulated a research question related to the common theme throughout part 1 and 2. This overarching theme is involuntary placement in a violent community and its consequences. My research question is: How does the trauma of being part of a violent community impact long-term perception? I started part 3 with the introduction, where I introduced the three subsection topics. The first subsection is “violent communities,” which talks about life in a violent community. The second subsection is titled “Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder”. This section is an overview of PTSD and its general effects. The third subsection is “Long-Term Perception,” and is about the long-term effects on perception on PTSD sufferers. I found that trauma experienced at an early age has a negative impact on long-term perception and everyday activities.
Part 1, 2 and 3:
Part 1:
Part 1 of my writing serves as an introduction to the overarching theme across all parts. Part 1 is a rhetorical analysis of A Bronx Tale, the film. In short, A Bronx Tale is a film about a young boy who grows up torn between his two biggest role models: the seemingly perfect neighborhood gangster, and his hard-working father. I establish the many themes presented throughout the film and connect them to various scenes, which depict them well. I discussed the film’s effect on my perception. This effect is that I try to form my decisions in the same manner that the main character of A Bronx Tale would; that is, by weighing the benefits and consequences when I am confused about which course of action to take.
Part 2:
Part 2 of my writing is a story about a time when I used this changed perception and improved decision-making to get out of a bad situation. The story takes place in middle school, around when I was 12 years old. The story is about one day when I was offered but declined a cigarette, despite peer pressure from my friends. This experience served as one of the most obvious times I used the changed perception resulted from A Bronx Tale to avoid negative consequences. I try to hone in on my exact thoughts and emotions throughout the whole situation.
Part 3:
In Part 3 of my writing I formulated a research question that related to my overarching theme “Involuntary placement in a violent community and its consequences. My research question was: How do the traumas resulted from being part of a violent community impact long-term perception? In Part 3 I wanted to focus on how long-term perception is changed in an individual suffering from involuntary placement in a violent community. To do this I researched studies which recorded data for elderly people’s mental health who experienced different levels of trauma at a young age because of being part of a violent community. My results concluded only negative effects. One of these effects was a negative outlook on the world. In addition to researching changes in perception, I researched the long-term physical changes, which were also damaging.
