Footnote 1: in this note, Smith reflects on an experience in the dentist’s where she realized how she had very little control of her younger. She related the struggle of the dentist to get his job done with a more irrational frustration one of her teachers had when Smith was found speaking Spanish.

 

Footnote 2:Irena Klepfisz uses her childhood as a focal point to illustrate how language facilitated the inferiority of women. She mentions how as she grew older she learned more words that are able to evaluate her internal struggles with inferiority.

 

Footnote 7: Melanie Kay/Kantrowitz is using her experiences as a Chicano feminist to describe the shame and oppression women feel when even pronouncing words a certain way. She emphasized how this is a feeling that only women can feel and empathize with.

 

Footnote 10/11: in this footnote it talks about how even though Chicanas are biologically Native American, they define themselves as Hispanic. This creates even more diversion from the authenticity of who a lot of Hispanics are as people
