Blog 6: Research Update

Statement: The way music affects a person’s emotions and why it happens.

Wishlist:
1.What are some factors that may affect a person’s emotions when listening to music?
2.What is the Doctrine of Affections?
3.What are some melodies that people associate with sadness?
4.What are some techniques that musicians/composers use that help listeners connect with them?

In an ideal world, primary sources are able to help me with my research. If the music theorist that came up with the Doctrine of Affections is still alive, I can speak to him and find the sources he used in an ideal world. In addition, I can look for books or experiments that show the effect that music has on the human emotions.

In a less ideal world, I can use secondary sources like journals or articles that may have information with music and human emotions.

In order to find the information I need to complete my research, I will need a strategy to obtain sources. I will use the Baruch Library search to find the necessary sources I need to gather information about my topic. Then, I will search for some databases that are offered by Baruch to find scholarly journals and articles to see how people think about that topic. Finally, I will look for credible primary sources that may also help me complete my research.
