In my first unit writing I discussed the meaning of the semicolon and what it meant to me. Even though there were a vast number of themes in my writing, the two major ones were suicide awareness and simplicity. The whole piece discusses a story of a young girl trying to take her life because of the issues she faces on an everyday basis. The artifact that I had chosen was the semicolon, one of the biggest suicide awareness symbols. A punctuation marks that’s means nothing to almost everyone, but all also means the world to some. It is a simple mark that separates two pieces of a sentence, but in the world that sentence is your life and the semicolon spilt it into two. It is a simple piece that many get as a tattoo to have as a reminder that they chose their life story. Even when life gets hard you need to put a semicolon in it and change the next part. That even if you tried to end your life, you won the battle and you have gotten stronger and want to continue living. Because this symbol is so simple and tiny, no one but you has to see it. When I first saw this tattoo, I was in the hospital hoping my friend would wake up from her suicide attempt. She had it tattooed on the inside of her finger, and got it to symbolize her struggles with depression and mental health. This symbol even though being my artifact, could also be a metaphor. It is a reoccurring symbol and has a meaning that not everyone understands. One of my tropes was repeating the words “she swallows.” It created an effect of worriedness and seriousness in the writing so the reader could grasp how important that moment in her life was. She spends over an hour sitting on the floor going over all of the issues she faced and how it affected her. It allows the reader to see that depression, mental health, and suicide, stem from many different areas, and build up from all the issues in life.
