I consider myself a part of many discourse communities. Some discourse communities that I am a member of are American Born Chinese, handball, immigrant family, Brooklyn Tech alumni, Baruch College student, and relationship.
A discourse community that can relate to my cultural artifact of “Marvin’s Room” would be sad boys. A sad boy can be defined as a person that is thinking about how lonely he is due to bad relationships or rejections from girls that he has liked. A person, typically a teen, that is in the community would say that they are in their bag when they listen to the song. Being in their bag is similar to being in a state of depression. When people are in their bag, they tend to begin to abuse drugs and alcohol or have depressed thoughts. I used to agree with the way people think when I was in the community. As I grew older, I started to stray away from the community and challenged the way they think. There was a time in my life where I was a sad boy and became in my bag for a while, but eventually with the help of my friends I climbed out of that state.
A person that is outside this community would have to know what being in their bag is, different terms for drugs, and things Drake say. Ever since I was a child, I was a fan of Drake. He had many songs that tells a story about different situations that he has experienced, and I feel that I was able to connect with him through his different songs. My relationship to this community has changed since I was young from being a sad boy to just being a Drake fan. The time that I got lead on by a girl has given me a learning experience that the influences in that community are not the greatest.

I would suggest that you write your story on an instance where you used Marvin’s Room to cope with a time where you were in your bag, specifically as a result of relationship problems.
