Metaphors You Live By

Dylan Rutkowska

In my first unit writing project I chose the movie A Bronx Tale. I wrote a rhetorical analysis on the film, reviewing how the creator used various film techniques and scenes to convey certain messages. I also talked about how the movie has impacted me and changed my perspective of the world. I would associate the following themes with the movie: the choices you make can shape your life forever, fatherhood, loyalty, fear vs. love, family’s importance, and the effects of wasted talent. Fatherhood is a theme because Calogero is stuck between two father figures who are on opposites sides of the spectrum. Wasted talent is a theme because there are instances throughout the film that wasted talent is proven (mostly through a character’s downhill turn in life after choosing the be a gangster). In the genre of drama, some of the most prevalent tropes are: murder/death, something bad turns out to be something good (and vice versa), a revelation for the main character, an ambiguous situation, and many more. A Bronx Tale serves as a metaphor for all of it themes; although it mostly represents that choice’s an individual makes can shape their life forever.
