1) This dictionary was published in 1976, and even though it was published a while ago, I do not think it is outdated and this is because many of the terms are still used today.  It’s publisher “Editorial Juventud,” is pretty reputable and has been around since 1923.  They specialize in books for children and teenagers, and interestingly enough, the first book they ever published was Peter Pan.

2) This dictionary would be most useful for translating scholarly articles/journals, and more advanced writing and that is because the terms are much more complex, they are not your everyday words.  For instance, this dictionary includes words such as depreciation, subsidize, versatility, vigour and quite frankly some words I have never came across before.

3) In my opinion, one of the biggest problems we have encountered through this course is knowing whether we are using the right translation in the right context.  Many times in English we use one single word in many different contexts, but translating it to Spanish you many have a few different ways of using that same word.  For example, I looked up the word “develop” and found 32 different definitions, with each translation explained in depth as to which context it can be used in, and for some words, the definitions took up more than three pages.

4) I do think this dictionary can be very useful and that is because sometimes learning a new language can be very difficult, let alone learning the more complex words.  It also cuts straight to the chase and does not involve smaller, everyday words that you may already know the meaning to.  In addition to that, it really goes in depth to give you all the possible meanings.

Left Ventricle Calcification

Cardiac calcifications normally occur in the valves, the sinus and atrioventricular nodes, the coronary arteries and less frequently in the ventricular myocardium as a result of a previous heart attack.  These last few are associated with complications, including cardiac failure, systemic embolisms and arrhythmias.

This is an exceptional case of severe myocardial calcification associated with medical treatment of refractory cardiac failure.

This is regarding a 58 year old patient with a history of previous myocardial infarctions resulting in a necrotic dilated cardiomyopathy (left ventricular ejection fraction of 10%) with multiple hospitalizations due to cardiac failure.  Admitted to our center for medical treatment (inotropes and BCIA – Biofeedback Certification International Alliance) of another overall refractory cardiac failure symptom.  Both in the anteroposterior chest x-ray; chest tomography and coronary angiography (left oblique view) show the previous level of wall thickness calcification, lateral and cardiac apex (Solid arrows).

The patient was referred to another center for a cardiac transplant evaluation.

Translating a UN resolution vs. a marketing campaign by Samantha Persaud

Whether it be the United Nations, or a company trying to expand to different markets, translation is crucial to their success, but not just any type of translation.  Translating a campaign the way you would a UN resolution or vice versa would be disastrous and that is because they both involve two very different styles of translation.  When you are translating a campaign, you must be aware of who you are marketing to, who you are trying to reach out to, and what message you are sending.  Certain phrases that appeal to one audience may not make any sense to another.  Sometimes the product or service a company is offering has to be marketed in a totally different way to attract a different set of consumers.  For example, if you look at the way Cafe Bustelo is marketed to its Hispanic consumers compared to its American consumers, it is very different.  For the Hispanic audience, Cafe Bustelo is percieved as a product that brings your family and friends together, but for the American audience, it is marketed as a coffee that is superior to other brands like Starbucks and it is the new coffee that everyone is drinking.   The message that a campaign sends to different consumers does not necessarily have to be translated word for word, whereas translating a UN resolution can be considered the opposite.  For a UN resolution, translators do not have much room to play with their translations.  They cannot search for different ways of saying the same thing, and in fact they typically have only one option of translating words and phrases.  An example of this would be translating “Resolution adopted.”  There is no room for trying to say adopted in different ways, rather the only way to translate this would be “Resolución aprobada,” and anything else would be considered wrong and can be interpreted differently in each of the six languages.  When translating documents such as a UN resolution, it is important for each country to agree and follow the same rules and regulations.

Campaña Publicitaria – “Optimum’s Triple Play” – by Samantha Persaud

Got that 877-393-4448 stuck in your head now? Well it is without a doubt that Optimum’s Triple Play commercial has managed to leave a lasting impression on many of its viewers.  Although many consider it annoying, I think it is quite catchy and gets the point across clearly.  Indeed Optimum has successfully marketed to its target market with this particular commercial.  What makes it so memorable is its specific Hispanic aspects, such as the reggaetón beat that plays along, the Cuban-American rapper Pitbull and those few times where we hear “Mi gente.”  Those major features cause certain consumers to respond and to acknowledge what Optimum is providing.

In my opinion, Optimum is reaching out to a Hispanic audience here in the U.S., specifically those who frequently call back home and need calling services, and we get a sense of that when the commercial specifically mentions the ability to call Puerto Rico with Optimum.   Personally I enjoy this commercial, mainly because of the music, but I do feel Optimum’s marketing strategy here is quite commendable.

London – Argentina’s national women’s field hockey team, Las Leonas, the reigning World Cup champions, today defeated their Chinese counterparts, Beijing 2008 Olympic Games silver medalists, 1-0, in their second friendly match in London before their debut Sunday at the Olympic Games against South Africa.

The only goal was scored from a penalty corner by defender Noel Barrionuevo, until ten minutes into the second half.

“We played well.  I was satisfied with the team performance.  China wanted to play within closed doors, therefore we tried to make a replication of what we are going to do on Sunday at the debut with South Africa,” said the team coach, Carlos Retegui, after the game.

Carlos Slim’s Company Contests $138.55 Million Fine Imposed in Ecuador – Version Adecuada by Samantha Persaud

The company Conecel, owned by América Móvil, rejected the fine of 138.5 million dollars that the Superintendency for Control of Market Power of Ecuador imposed on it, on the grounds that Carlos Slim’s firm exercised an “abuse of market power” in 2012, and Slim announced that in his defense he will exercise the legal remedies that the law provides.

In an announcement Conecel indicated that the fine is unjustified and it responds to “a complaint from the state-owned CNT (Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones) with regards to five sites (of the thousands that Conecel leases) in which CNT claims would not have been able to expand their network.  In the same areas these five fields are, there are options and alternative fields, equally suitable, in which the required infrastructure could well be installed. Then, there hasn’t been an entry barrier nor competitive constraint for any operator.”

The company that operates in Ecuador as a subsidiary of Claro believes that “the magnitude of the fine is disproportionate, violates the constitutional principle of proportionality, and affects the legal security on which the investment processes are based.”

“Conecel will exercise the resources that the law provides, in order to achieve a resolution according to the law, that ensures due process within a framework of legal security.”
