Translation Methodology between an UN Resolution Vs a Marketing Campaign by Julissa Polanco

When it comes to translating documents, the translator must take into consideration many aspects of the material he/she is going to work on. For instance if we compare the methodology between translating a document, specifically a Resolution, for the UN and translating a marketing campaign there are many things to take into consideration. The gap between the two is very notorious, a translation for the UN requires a specific and ONLY language (one format or model to follow). Translating an UN resolution also requires a special skills set as the translator needs to have knowledge of the vocabulary used a the UN. There is a specific format that the translator must keep from the type font, to the spaces and bullet points are done for a reason. For this type of translation there is NOT room for “adaptation” as there is only one way to translate their document. On the other had, when working on a marketing campaign, the translator must have plenty consideration for “adaptation”. Who is this going to, where is it going to show? are the phrases or lines for this campaign understandable in the receiving language. The format used with marketing campaign the “sky is the limit” since it requires lots of creativity to make sure is acceptable for the receiving language. Both translations are totally different in content, style and methodology.

Translation Methodology

The words translated and the context of the documents must be taken in consideration. The translation would favor for neutral, straight forward words. In contrast a Marketing translation is geared towards the emotion that the advertisement is trying to convey.

Because of the nature of advertisement, the words and ideas used are rather easy to understand, and the language is usually not complicated. While in the United Stations a lot of complex terminology is used, and the intended audience is of power figures and head of states. A wrong translation in Ad campaign might generate some loses for the benefactor company, but a wrong translation in the United Nations could even provoke international conflicts or even war.

While Marketing campaigns might not be fully aware of the audience it reaching ultimately, they do not invest as much time in delicacy or sensible information. Translators in the United Nations are exposed to more risk. Therefore I would use a careful and slow revision of my first draft looking for semantic errors, then I would revise again to make sure the information conveyed is both constant and tone neutral to the original document, and lastly hand it to a colleague for revision.

For an ad campaign the risk for a translator is lower since there is a specified target audience to be influenced. Editors and marketing specialist will work with translators do deliver the same message of a product using a different language. The translation should include words that are familiar to the majority of the target audience.

Argentina Off to a Good Start

London – Argentina’s national women field hockey team, Las Leonas, the reigning World Cup champions, today defeated 1-0 their Chinese counterparts, Beijing 2008 Olympic Games silver medalists, in their second friendly match in London, before their debut Sunday at the Olympic Games against South Africa.

The defense Noel Barrionuevo scored the only point for the match, from short corner at minute 10 of the second half.

“We played well. I left satisfied with the team’s performance. China wanted to play behind closed doors, so we tried to make a drill of what we are going to do on Sunday in our debut against South Africa,” expressed the team’s coach, Carlos Retegui, after the match.

Johannesburgo – Argentina venció rotundamente 6-1 al equipo surafricano femenino de hockey el sábado, en el primero de cinco partidos amistosos en el Mar del Plata, Argentina.

Las surafricanas se recuperaron de un punto en contra, liderando 3-1 en el medio tiempo, antes de anotar otros tres puntos más en la segunda mitad.

Suráfrica tomó la delantera en el minute 14, cuando Bernie Coston puso la mano y le dio el primer penalti de la esquina.

Argentina, the reigning World Cup champions and London 2012 Olympic Games silver medallists, came back strongly with fine field goals from Carla Rebecchi, Daniela Sruoga, and Delfina Merino.

Falsos Cognados – Andres Rivera

Back when I was still learning English, I relied a lot on translating when talking to others. However, I was not completely aware that although some things sound similar, they convey different meanings.

I was asked about my parents’ current work but I answered like this “my father’s actual job is waiter.” My very ne sarcastic teacher looks at me and said “what is his real job then?” After some other sarcastic comment he finally let me know that I meant to say “Current job” for “trabajo actual”

Similarly to this false cognate, some friend started “vamos a ver cartoon.”  Me puse a pensar y no creía  que fuera divertido ver un pedazo de “Cartón.” Cuando llegamos a la casa de uno de ellos me di cuenta que se referían a los muñecos animados.

Así me fui enterando lo importante de verificar términos nuevos antes implementarlos en mis conversaciones. De esta manera me ahorraría muchos momentos vergonzosos.

Left Ventricle Calcification

Cardiac calcifications typically occur in the valves, the sinus and atrioventricular node, the coronary arteries and more rarely in the ventricular myocardium as sequelae of a previous heart attack. These latter are associated with complications, which include heart failure, systemic embolisms and arrhythmia.
This is an exceptional case of severe myocardial calcification associated with heart failure refractory to medical treatment.
This is a 58 year old patient with a history of a previous myocardial infarction that progresses to ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (10% left ventricular ejection fraction) with several hospitalizations for heart failure. He is admitted to our hospital for another case of overall heart failure refractory to medical treatment (inotropes and IABP). Both in the anteroposterior chest X-ray, the CT chest scan and the coronary angiography (right oblique view), calcification of the ventricular wall thickness at the lateral and anterior levels, and at the apex of the heart (solid arrows) can be observed.
The patient was referred to another center to be evaluated for heart transplantation.

Calcification of the Left Ventricle

By: Gabriel Pérez Baztarrica, Fabio Sánchez, Rafael Porcile

The cardiac calcifications usually occur in the valves, sinus and atrioventricular nodes, coronary arteries, and on rare occasions, in the ventricular myocardium as a consequence of a prior heart attack. The latter are associated with complications which include heart failure, systemic embolism, and arrhythmia.

This is an exceptional case of a serious myocardium calcification associated with refractory heart failure to the medical treatment.

It involves a 58 year old patient with a history of past myocardial infarction which has developed into a necrosis dilated cardiomyopathy (a 10% ejection fraction of the left ventricle) with multiple placements due to heart failure. He is admitted to our center for another combination of refractory global heart failure to the medical treatment (inotropic and IABP). The anteroposterior chest radiograph, the tomography of the chest, and the coronary angiography (oblique right view) all show evidence of calcification of the thickness in the ventricle wall at anterior and lateral levels and at the edge of the heart (arrows below).

The patient has been referred to another center for an evaluation for a cardiac transplant.

Evaluacion de un Diccionario by Samantha Persaud

Diccionario de Dificultades del Ingles

-Alfonso Torrents dels Prats

Publisher: Editorial Juventud

1) This dictionary was published in 1976, and even though it was published a while ago, I do not think it is outdated and this is because many of the terms are still used today.  It’s publisher “Editorial Juventud,” is pretty reputable and has been around since 1923.  They specialize in books for children and teenagers, and interestingly enough, the first book they ever published was Peter Pan.

2) This dictionary would be most useful for translating scholarly articles/journals, and more advanced writing and that is because the terms are much more complex, they are not your everyday words.  For instance, this dictionary includes words such as depreciation, subsidize, versatility, vigour and quite frankly some words I have never came across before.

3) In my opinion, one of the biggest problems we have encountered through this course is knowing whether we are using the right translation in the right context.  Many times in English we use one single word in many different contexts, but translating it to Spanish you many have a few different ways of using that same word.  For example, I looked up the word “develop” and found 32 different definitions, with each translation explained in depth as to which context it can be used in, and for some words, the definitions took up more than three pages.

4) I do think this dictionary can be very useful and that is because sometimes learning a new language can be very difficult, let alone learning the more complex words.  It also cuts straight to the chase and does not involve smaller, everyday words that you may already know the meaning to.  In addition to that, it really goes in depth to give you all the possible meanings.
