1)  How authoritative is this dictionary?

 

The Collins Spanish Dictionary is a bilingual dictionary of English and Spanish derived from the Collins Word Web, an analytical linguistics database. It contains usage guides for English and Spanish (known as Lengua y Uso and Language in Use respectively) and English and Spanish verb tables. In 2009, the dictionary was brought for the iPhone & iPad. The iOS app of this dictionary, which has become one of the most popular Spanish dictionaries in the App store

2)How reputable is it’s publisher?

 

The publisher of the dictionary is Harper-Collins which is a fairly reputable publishing company.

 

3)Is it written by one or many people?

 

Previous editions were written by Collin Smith and as new editions came out, there were various other contributors who were involved in the re-writing process.

 

4)When was it published?

 

This dictionary was published most recently in 2005. The other years it was published are:  1971, 1988, 1992, 1993, 1996, 2007, 2000, and 2003.

 

5)  In what forms is it available?

 

It is available as a hardcover, and as a smart phone app.

 

6) How widely is it distributed?

 

It is not distributed very widely, but it is a well known resource.

 

7)  Is it cited widely?

 

It is not cited widely in the United States.

 

8)  List at least three projects for which a translator would consult this dictionary.

 

1)  Coming across unfamiliar words.

2)  Studying abroad and needing a reference to understand the difference in meaning in particular words.

3) Educating people unfamiliar with Spanish about the historical context of a word and/or introductory language courses for Spanish.

 

9) Use the dictionary. Look up a few words or pieces of information in it; then check the information it provides against other sources. Do other sources confirm what the dictionary says? Is this dictionary purely historic interest, or is it relevant for contemporary usage as well?

 

The dictionary is fairly accurate and explicit about word definitions varying from region to region. It has examples that apply to life and culture, words that are commonly confused, and extra emphasis on fundamental Spanish verbs such as hacer, poder, poner, ser, and estar.

 

10) How user-friendly is the dictionary? Is it’s information presented in a coherent way, and is it easy to locate and readily retrievable?

 

The dictionary is color-coded and very easy to use. The dictionary also has pronunciations for both English and Spanish in the Phonetic alphabet. It also has plenty of information written in a coherent manner. It is very easy to access since it is also available as a smart phone app

Translating a U.N Resolution vs. Marketing Campaigns by Hira Afridi

Translating a marketing campaign and translating a U.N resolution call for very different methods although they do share similarities. A marketing campaign can be translating with more freedom versus a U.N Security Council Resolution call. A marketing campaign would use localization in order to cater to the audience and communities it is aiming target. In many instances, translators would develop very different slogans and campaigns to advertise the same product due to the fact that some words and phrases simply cannot be translated in the same context. On the other hand, translating UN documents requires precision and a specialized lexicon, using a very specific vocabulary. In the case of translating UN documents, there was only one “correct” translation whereas translation in itself is not subjected to only one acceptable version. In the earlier chapters of Bellos’ book, we read that there were hundreds of acceptable translations of the same Italian poem. In the case of such documents, we are limited to one correct translation because any alterations could change the very nature of the document. Due to it’s specific formatting, this area of translation does not allow any room for creativity whatsoever.

Wendy’s: Dave’s Hot N’ Juicy Cheeseburger by Hira Afridi

These commercials are both for the same product: Dave’s Hot N’ Juicy Cheeseburger from Wendy’s. The commercial in English has a strong theme of family values and pride. Similarly, the Spanish version deals with family values but in a humorous manner. These commercials present an interesting opportunity for us to compare and contrast the localization of both commercials and how the company used the theme of family values to promote a burger named after the founder of Wendy’s.

Jarritos: Localization and a Resistance Against Globalization by Hira Afridi

Spanish: “Everyone smiles with Jarritos”

 

English:  “No somos de aquí.”

 

Jarritos, a popular soft drink among the Latino community  uses localization in advertisements. The advertisement in Spanish has a traditional Mexican wrestler wearing his mask, smiling while holding a bottle of Jarritos. Above the image it says, “Everyone smiles with Jarritos”  in Spanish. Jarritos used a traditional Mexican image and gave it a warm twist in order to connect particularly with it’s Mexican consumers, as it is the home country of the beverage. Aside from the image, any Spanish-speaking person can also enjoy this ad because of the impact of the slogan: EVERYONE smiles. Perhaps this is why it is one of the most consumed soft drinks within the Hispanic/Latino community.

However, the English campaign for Jarritos is completely different. As much as the Spanish advertisement was bringing the Latino community together, the English was just the opposite. The  ad states, “We are not from here”.  Using a similar image of a Mexican luchador, this advertisement appears to be a divisive propaganda. I personally believe that this campaign was a clear statement from the company: Jarritos would not change the authenticity of it’s flavor for “gringos”, unlike many other companies that cater to their audience’s taste palettes throughout the world.

The localization that Jarritos used was incredibly interesting to see. The bold slogans and the vivid images of their campaigns are note-worthy, as the company of Jarritos marches to the beat of their own drum and does not fall prey to the rapid globalization we face today.

Matt Groening, creator of  “The Simpsons” takes advantage of Ellen DeGeneres’ idea to create his own version with his classic dark humor.

 

The historic selfie, which was proposed by Ellen DeGeneres during the Oscars Gala, continues a massive game. It has been a topic of debate on television programs, news bulletins, and radio broadcasting, an uncontrollable party in which also the creator of the Simpsons has joined using the photos of Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Jennifer Lawrence, and company to recreate the scene with Homer Simpson in it.

 

In his drawing, appears the same people and the father of the family of the tribe of Springfield being kicked by Bradley Cooper while they are taking a picture, in order to avoid slipping in the picture and with the dark humor characterizing the legendary series on FOX. The occurrence was also posted on Twitter, with the idea of continuing the trend of retweeting something that DeGeneres began on Sunday, beating a record with more than three million reposts.

 

The popular photo has not only been recreated by Groening. There is also a version with Lego models circulating on the internet, as well as many other replicas as the same as the one DeGeneres was commissioned to share with her followers of a few child cancer patients, posing the same way as the stars of Hollywood did in the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

Argentina’s women field hockey team Las Leonas, last World Cup champions, today defeated their Chinese counterparts, runner-up in Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, by 1-0, in their second friendly match in London before their debut in the Olympic Games, which will be on Sunday before South Africa.

 

The only goal was scored by the defense Noel Barrionuevo from the penalty corner at ten minutes of the second half.

Carlos Slim’s Firm to Contest $138.5 Million Issued in Ecuador

The company owned by America Móvil rejected the fine of $138.5 million dollars imposed upon it by the Superintendence of Market Power Control of Ecuador, on the basis that the company of Carlos Slim exercised “Abuse of Market Power” in 2012. Conecel announced that in it’s defense it would exercise the remedies provided by the law.

 

In a press statement Conecel stated that the fine is unjustified and that it results from “a complaint from the state-owned operator CNT (Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones) in regard to five properties of the thousands that Conecel leases which CNT alleges that it was not able to expand it’s network. In the same zone in which are these five areas. there are other equally suitable options and properties where the required infrastructure could be installed. Therefore, there has not been any barrier for entrance nor restriction on competition for any operator. “

 

The company that operates in Ecuador as an affiliate of Claro said that, “The magnitude of the fine is disproportionate, violates the constitutional principle of proportionality, and affects the legal security in which the investment processes are based.

 

Conecel will exercise the remedies the law provides in order to achieve a resolution under the law that guarantees the due process within a frame of legal security.
