Dictionary Evaluation Assignment – By Paulo Pinho

Diccionario comercial español-inglés, inglés español: El secretario; compilación al día de todos los términos y expresiones para la correspondencia comercial, española-inglesa, inglesa-española / por Alejandro Frías – Sucre Giraud

This commercial (business)  dictionary in my evaluation has shown to be very limited and unreliable in its presentation at the same time defining many words that are in an antiquated way that is out of date. This specific version was copyrighted in 1940 and published in 1977 (for this version, edition 5.807).

The dictionary is also available in the editions which were printed in the years of 1949, 1981, 1984, 1985, and 1990. It is available in Google Boooks online in scanned versions for the versions of 1990, 1981, and 1940.

Even five versions of this book exist, this is a small number since the dictionary has was first published in 1940. It has not been updated since 1990 and is not even listed any longer in the publishers website, evident that it is no longer being produced for circulation in the market. They are found in a very limited quantity, usually with a single book in stock in various different sites that show up on Google very randomly, many out of stock. The book can be found for sale at around $4.00 per book. It has been found in three different countries according to my searches; The United States, Canada, and Spain – all of them in the same limited quantity, most of them used of course, some claim to have it in new condition.

The publisher was founded in 1923 in Barcelona Spain where it is still located to this day. Its website contains many books in the category of dictionaries, classics, children’s books, biographies, history, gastronomy and others. Even though that is a wide variety of books in its website, the website is poor, as it looks lke it was cheaply made and in more than 90 years of existence, it would be expected that there would be more publications then just these.  The website looks poor in its presentation as seen here http://www.editorialjuventud.es/

The author “Alejandro Frías – Sucre Giraud” is almost completely unknown and shows up as only having publish this one dictionary and one other book which the title can be found even more randomly than the dictionary, however there is not even a description of what the book is about.

Reviews for this publisher were hard to find. This one was the only one possible to be obtained … http://www.statscrop.com/www/editorialjuventud.es, which gives a rating of #1,172,321 in the world, which does not mean much since the review site is also poor and does not explain what guidelines it follows in making this assessment – it only states that a smaller number means high volume of visits which tells me nothing if it does not state how many sites were evaluated. The website is  worth $1,498 and its revenue is of $4.00 per day. The publisher does not even have a Wikipedia page. Its Facebook page has only 2, 482 likes. It is cited very few times. This is disappointing in relation to the fact that it has 347,000 results on Google search, but they repeat themselves many times.

This dictionary could have been used in three following instances if it was reliable in accordance with its field ( or at least the field that it was initially intended to address):

  1. A translator in the New York stock exchange may want to send technical information in a letter about stocks and bonds and inform a person in Spanish, such as in the stock market of Spain about the profit that was made in capital in relation to these specific stocks.
  2. A person may want to know commercial/ business terms in order to refer to a colleague who will be traveling from the United States to Spain and that has been assigned to work in a Real Estate company and explain what his qualifications are in this area.

3. A scholar might be in need to translate his essay in Economics and may need some technical terms that address economic concepts.

However, as already mentioned, none of these cases above may be done correctly since the dictionary is of very poor quality and does not perform according to what its intended purpose should be. This dictionary is old, contains definitions that are outdated such as describing the word “value” and its use in context of “value in cash” as “pago en metálica” which makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and has definitions of simple words such as the word “pencil” which are irrelevant and unnecessary to be in a technical dictionary, as the word is completely basic. In addition the dictionary is very small, for example for the translation of the words with the letter “v” from English to Spanish there is only a page and a half of definitions and the book is quite small (4″ by 9″ or so).

This dictionary was easy to retrieve and locate at Baruch College, however as it is seen in the search it is not easily found everywhere and may be hard to obtain and take long times to ship if found as seen in the websites that came up when doing a Google search.

U.N. Resolution Translation and Marketing Campaingn Comparison – By Paulo Pinho

It is seen in comparing the translations of the U.N. Resolution and the Marketing Campaigns that there are clear differences. Localization plays a big role in the translation of the advertizing campaigns which is not true for the U.N. resolution. As cultures change depending on where one is located, the campaign has to be adapted to that culture and the message may be changed slightly or even completely to a whole new advertizement. There is a lot of freedom in translating or “localizing” an advertizement campaign. For example, in many countries McDonald’s has created completely different strategies in advertizing their products, going as far as even changing their menus and creating new sandwiches depending on the tastes of the people of that culture.

With the resolution of the United Nations it is clear that translation has a completely different role in this field. The U.N. has a database called UNTERM (http://unterm.un.org/)  which tells us specific terminology of how to translate official documents of the General Assembly, Security Council, human rights documents and many others. There is a specific translation guideline that has to be followed as each term has its equivalent in another language that has been predetermined. Changing a term that is part of the organization can be problematic and may cause many issues for the organization.

Therefore it can be clearly seen that the these two translations vary significantly as one gives us complete freedom to be creative and adapt according to the local culture while the other tells us that there is an universal terminology database that has to be strictly followed. All of this makes and many other aspects of translating makes this field very complex and much more detailed than what one would naturally think.

Campaña Publicitaria – I Need Spain by Paulo Pinho

The exact same campaign is shown here in both English and Spanish. Even though the ad is in both languages the target audience for it seems to be foreigners of Spain. The family which is portrayed in the video looks to be American, at least in my eyes. However, the overall idea is to attract foreigners, be it speakers of the Spanish language, American language or any other.

The ad has a sentimental feel to it and  pulls our attention into a time of relaxation where all the daily worries that we have are left behind. All the running around of our daily routines, work, and even responsibilities such as having to find a nanny are not needed here in Spain. It also concentrates is this particular version of the “I need Spain” ads in the theme of family.

The natural beauty of Spain in addition to the activities that can be done with the family and historical landmarks as well as the type of people that live there and their life style is emphasized.

Being in a place that you do not need to look at a menu to order food and where you do not need to depend on a gps system to find where you want to go, due to the fact that people are so friendly to guide you along is seen as a luxury. The ad tells you to concentrate on the simple things in life and to put your life behind and return to an experience that will be unforgettable and always make you come back, which is to come to Spain!

Carlos Slim’s Company rejects $138.5 million fine issued in Ecuador – Translated by Paulo Pinho

La Jornada (Mexico City)

Carlos Slim’s Company rejects $138.5 million fine issued in Ecuador

By Miriam Posada / Mon, 10 Feb 2014 21:56

The company Conecel owned by América Móvil rejected the fine of $138.5 million which was issued by the Superintendency for Control of Market Power of Ecuador, finding that Carlos Slim’s company took part in “market power abuse” during 2012, and announced that in its defense, will use the legal resources  that the law allows.

In an announcement, Conecel noted that the fine is unjustified and that it responds to “a complaint from the state owned operator Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) that refers to 5 pieces of land (of the thousands rented by Conecel) and in which the CNT alleges that it could not expand its network. In the same area in which these 5 pieces of land are located, there are options and alternative pieces of land, just as adequate, in which the installation of the required infrastructure could be done just as well. There has not been, therefore, any barrier to entry or restriction on competition for any operator.”

The company, which operates in Ecuador as an affiliate of Claro, considered that “the magnitude of the fine is disproportionate, violates the constitutional principles of proportionality, and impacts the legal securities on which the processes of investment are based.”

“Conecel will use the legal resources that the law allows, in the attempt to achieve a resolution in accordance with the law, which will guarantee due process within the framework of legal securities.”

MY OWN TRANSLATION

Nobody has yet been able to explain how the accident took place, but everyone is glad that there are no victims or anyone injured to feel sorry about.

The incident took place yesterday during the early morning, at 1st street between 73rd and 74th, when a red Peugeot 206 crashed into a tree and was destroyed.

The parts of the car, as the residents observed it, flew everywhere, including the motor, which ended up on the sidewalk, at the entrance of a house.

Fortunately, police sources explained, the driver of the vehicle, whose identity was not revealed, was able to get out on his own and was able to contemplate the results of the terrible crash.

GOOGLE TRANSLATE VERSION

Nobody still failed to explain how the accident happened, but thank everyone who has not no victims or injured.

The incident occurred early yesterday morning, in lane 1 between 73 and 74, when a red Peugeot 206 hit a tree and was destroyed.

The pieces of road, according to the neighbors could appreciate, jumped to either side, including the motor, which ended up on the sidewalk, at the entrance of a home.

Fortunately, explained to police sources, the driver of the car, whose identity was not revealed, could they get off on their own and began to contemplate the result of the terrible impact.

ANALISIS OF THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MY OWN TRANSLATION AND GOOGLE TRANSLATE VERSION

Google was not able to translate the first words of the first sentence; it was not able to figure out the fact that nobody was able to explain something yet, and stated that “nobody still failed” which does not make sense. It also has difficulty in translating the words “no hay que lamentar victimas o heridos” which came out as “has not no victims or injured” it forgets to include the word “lamentar” as well – worry about or feel sorry for. Using the words “thank everyone” instead of “everyone is glad” shows that Google does not know grammar and sentence construction very well and is not able to figure out these nuances in language.

The second sentence translated surprisingly well. However, in the third sentence it translated that “The pieces of the road”… “jumped to either side”. Somehow, Google got confused and was not able to figure out that the word “rodado” means car, for rodado is kind of an idiomatic expression meaning that which has wheels that spins. Google translates this as “road”. The machine translation was not able to figure out that “cualquier lado” does not mean “either side” it means to any directions and would actually need some human distinction to figure out that this meant that the parts of the car “flew everywhere”.

At the last sentence, Google is not able to figure out who is speaking to whom when the article talks about the police sources. It states “explained to police sources” when in fact the police sources are the one’s doing the explanation. The assumption that someone was explaining to the police when it is said “explicaran fuentes policiales” shows that the machine translator was not able to tune out that there was no “a” between the words “explicaran” and “fuentes” which would then make it sound like the police was receiving the explanations. Google translate is not able to figure out that “pudo bajarse por sus propios medios” is talking about a singular person, and also makes a grammatical error in not knowing how to change the words around to make sense, and so it comes out as “could they get off on their own” when the correct translation would be “was able to get out on his own”

POSIBLES EXPLICACIONES DE DAVID BELLOS

David Bellos explains in his writing in “Is That a Fish in Your Ear?” that machine translation is not able to know all the specific rules of grammar as well as contextual inferences that a human translator can. For this reason, we can see in the translation of this text that Google gets confused when the grammar varies and when idiomatic expressions come into play. Bellos explains that Google is only able to search for statistical data in a database in which previous works of literature, international conventions, or other academic text have once been recorded. Therefore, when a text such as this (which comes from a less known news source) is entered for translation and it is not in the database, Google has a hard time figuring it out, since Google does not really translate anything, it just looks for previously recorded text, which may have been dealt with before. In this case, the text will not be located and the translation will comes out far from perfect. Some believe that there will be one day that computers might be able to figure out these nuances. The Obama administration is investing heavily in science and technology maybe reach a point in history where it will be possible to translate the major languages of the world automatically without any difficulty by an automatic language system, but until then this is the reality that we have to deal with, the imperfect translations of programs such as Google Translate.
