Movie Night with Takashi Murakami: THIEF
Murakami in person present and discuss a personal favorite — Michael Mann’s 1981 neo(n)-noir THIEF — as part of our ongoing “Movie Night” series. “A philosophical thriller filled with modernist cool. James Caan’s the thief, contradictorily building and risking a future mapped out as meticulously as any of his lucrative hi-tech jobs; testing his emotional and criminal independence to the limits; eventually recognising that he’s either exercising or exorcising a death wish.” – Time Out (London)

JELLYFISH EYES
“Murakami’s directorial debut JELLYFISH EYES tells the story of a young boy and his unlikely new friend: a flying, jellyfish-like sprite. To his surprise, the boy soon discovers that his classmates all have similar friends—but that they, their creators and even their town itself aren’t what they seem. A hopeful tale pointedly set in a post-Fukushima world, Murakami’s film boasts unforgettable creature designs and handmade special effects nearly a decade in the making—a triumph of creativity and wonder.”

Yasujiro Ozu

Catch the classic films of legendary director Yasujiro Ozu at the IFC Center. The series ends September 27th.
