Screenings at IFC Center
Takashi Murakami
The IFC Center is “thrilled to welcome acclaimed Japanese artist Takashi Murakami in person this month for two nights in a row, presenting a personal favorite — Michael Mann’s THIEF — and his own directorial debut JELLYFISH EYES.”
Movie Night with Takashi Murakami: THIEF
Murakami in person present and discuss a personal favorite — Michael Mann’s 1981 neo(n)-noir THIEF — as part of our ongoing “Movie Night” series. “A philosophical thriller filled with modernist cool. James Caan’s the thief, contradictorily building and risking a future mapped out as meticulously as any of his lucrative hi-tech jobs; testing his emotional and criminal independence to the limits; eventually recognising that he’s either exercising or exorcising a death wish.” – Time Out (London)
JELLYFISH EYES
“Murakami’s directorial debut JELLYFISH EYES tells the story of a young boy and his unlikely new friend: a flying, jellyfish-like sprite. To his surprise, the boy soon discovers that his classmates all have similar friends—but that they, their creators and even their town itself aren’t what they seem. A hopeful tale pointedly set in a post-Fukushima world, Murakami’s film boasts unforgettable creature designs and handmade special effects nearly a decade in the making—a triumph of creativity and wonder.”
Yasujiro Ozu
Catch the classic films of legendary director Yasujiro Ozu at the IFC Center. The series ends September 27th.
“While virtually unknown outside Japan during his lifetime, Ozu’s work began to be screened abroad in the 1960s, bringing him fans around the world. Today, he is considered one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema, with such major filmmakers as Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders, Abbas Kiarostami, Mike Leigh, Aki Kaurismaki, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Pedro Costa and Claire Denis citing him as a profound influence upon their work.”
