The Fair will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2017 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the B2-level auxiliary gym (entrance on East 24^th street). Someone from the Study Abroad Office will be bringing flyers for the fairby departmental offices, and we would be very grateful if one or more of them could be posted. We would like to warmly invite you and the other members of the department to come to the fair, and would be grateful if you would encourage your students, and your colleagues’ students, to do the same.

Many students who were interested in studying abroad attended the Study Abroad Fair last spring. These fairs offer a wonderful opportunity for program providers to speak to Baruch students about thestudy abroad programs available to our students. This year, exchange students from our partner universities who are studying at Baruch this term, and Baruch students who have studied at those universities, will be staffing tables to give Baruch students even more information about campus lifeabroad. The Study Abroad Fair also gives Baruch faculty members the chance to learn more about the programs our students can attend. Understanding the kinds of academic and cultural experiences our students have abroad will help you gain a better sense of how study abroad might be more thoroughly integrated into a student’s overall college career.

The Paula Berggren Enrichment Fund

“The term ‘humanities’ includes, but is not limited to, the study and interpretation of the following: language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of national life.”

This fund, created by a generous donor and now about to launch its fourth year of operation, has two main purposes:  to assist students who wish to enroll in courses in the humanities at Baruch but lack the financial means to do so; and to enable classes in the humanities at Baruch to participate in extra-curricular activities that enrich students’ intellectual experience and understanding of their coursework.

Funds will be allocated by a committee lodged in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences that will meet several times a year to review applications by members of the Baruch community.  Student applications for tuition support in the fall semester should be made as early as possible in the registration process, preferably before the due date for tuition payment.  Applications from faculty for course activity support should be made as early as possible, but if funds remain available, worthy applications will be accepted until the last month of the semester in question.

Members of the committee for the academic year 2017-18 are Paula Berggren, Professor Emeritus of English; Susan Tenneriello, Associate Professor of Theater; and Boo Choi, Director of Administrative and Financial Services for the Weissman School.  Please direct applications to [email protected].

Student grants will be credited directly to the Bursar to cover the funded cost of tuition.  Funding for extra-curricular class activities will cover visits to museums, theaters, concerts, or other approved events; students will be expected to contribute a modest sum toward the costs of admission.  Funding does not cover transportation or food and will be capped at approximately $40 per student.

Join Japanese-language students and native Japanese speakers at this informal gathering to practice Japanese and English! Anyone with some Japanese language experience is welcome to attend.

For 30 minutes during our September 6^th meeting, special guest Fumiko Takada will perform Kyudo (traditional Japanese archery). Fumiko will demonstrate how to shoot in short distances, and explain the basics of the Kyudo. After the demonstration, we will move back to the usual activity of practicing conversational skills.
