Japanese vocalist Mika Shinno will be performing enka at Smalls Jazz Club in November. An enka ballad is a kind of Japanese popular song, a short narrative ballad which usually deals with sad love, old-type duty (giri) or sentiment (ninjo) and is sung in a tone peculiar to enka.
