Santiago, Chile | September 17, 2015
(EFE/14ymedio).-The number of deaths caused by the earthquake that occurred this Wednesday night in northern Chile now amounts to eleven people, reported the director of the National Emergency Office in Chile, Ricardo Toro. In addition there were nine people wounded, one person missing, one million evacuees and millions of material losses.
The earthquake’s magnitude —the third strongest in the history of this troubled nation, where in 1960 the greatest earthquake in history was registered —was produced at 7:54 PM, and its epicenter was located forty six kilometers west of the northern town in Canela, and it was fifteen point seven kilometers deep.
The earthquake’s strength led the Navy’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service to give a tsunami alert to the entire coast of Chile, more than four thousand kilometers in longitude, of which the authorities demanded immediate evacuation.
