Eleven dead, a million evacuees and millions lost by an earthquake in Chile

(EFE / 14ymedio)- Death toll from the earthquake Wednesday night in northern Chile now adds up to eleven people, reported the director of the Chilean National Office of Emergency (Onemi), Ricardo Toro. In addition, the quake left nine injured, one missing, a million evacuees and millions of dollars in damages.
The quake -the third strongest in the history of this long-suffering nation, where in 1960 the largest earthquake in history was recorded –it occurred at 7:54 PM local time and its epicenter was located 28 miles (46 kilometers) west of the northern town Canela and 9.7 miles (15.7 kilometers) of depth.
The strength of the quake determined that the Naval Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service gissued a tsunami alert for the entire Chilean coast, more than 2.48 miles (4.000 kilometers) in length, consequently the authorities ordered an immediate evacuation.
