Falsos Cognados – Genesis Alicea

When I first moved to this country, I was around six years old and had no idea how to speak english. The school that I attended in Westchester County had no bilingual classes for kids like me, so when I started school in the United States I was forced to speak english and write english. English did not come to me so easy, since I only spoke Spanish at home with my family and also because  I was new to this country. One day I was late to class, due to my mother’s change in work schedule. My teacher asked me why I was late and I responded by saying “because they changed my mother’s schedule at the fabric she works for.” I thought hat fabric meant “fabrica” when it really means “tela”. My teacher then told me it is not fabric but factory. That’s one of my many experiences with falsos cognados.
