Commercial – Genesis Alicea

https://youtu.be/IE_11mt0kfs

Advertising has become universal in our society. With all the cultures and languages in our world, ad campaigns are forced to do diverse projects or learn how to translate their message without losing its meaning. As you can see, both Ford Fusion advertisements, Spanish and English, are very different. Even though they are marketing the same product, different messages are being broadcasted to pursue the viewer to purchase the product.

The English Ford Fussion commercial is meant to attract American (white) viewers. From the start the commercial begins with a white man driving the vehicle. Then, the commercial goes on by explaining the advantages of the vehicle in a technological way. Who in America does not like technology? Americans are infatuated with technological advances. The exaggerated a bit by making the car fly, but they got their put across to attract these specific viewers.

On the other hand, the Spanish Ford Fussion commercial aims to attract the Latino community. It does not talk about the technology of the car but how much money you will be saving or “how far can twenty dollars take you.” The entire advertisement just speaks about money and savings, and how the product will be affordable in the long run. (Most Spanish people look for affordable things)

Volleyball: Peru vs. Venezuela in Women’s South American Volleyball Championship

Peru, with its U18 and U20 age group teams, made its debut against the Venezuelan selection.

Maria Jose Fermi

The Women’s South American Volleyball Championship began today. Venezuela is Peru’s first rival in Group A, which they also share with Colombia and Paraguay. Only two will advance to the semifinals and despite who gets upset, they will have to fight for the win from the start.

Once again, Peru arrives at the tournament with Frankenstein complex. Although this is a tournament of the adult category, for this 2015 Women’s South American Volleyball Championship only five players belong to the women’s team (Uribe, Yllescas, Egoavil, Muñoz and Olemar).

The other nine belong to U18 (Regalado, De la Peña, Guerrero and Sánchez)or U20 (Leyva, Gómez, Canessa and Almeida). With the limited selection of volleyball players, the coaches of all categories will have to learn how to face the reality of national volleyball (specially, the adult category).

Eleven dead, one million evacuees and millions of dollars in losses by an earthquake in Chile

Santiago, Chile | September 17, 2015

(EFE/14ymedio)- The number of deaths resulting from the earthquake that occurred Wednesday night in northern Chile already amounts to eleven people, as reported by the director of the National Emergency Office (ONEMI), Ricardo Toro. In addition there are nine injured, one missing, one million evacuees and millions of dollars in material losses.

The telluric movement- the third strongest in the history of this troubled nation, where in 1960, the largest earthquake was registered in history- it occurred at 7:54PM local time and its epicenter was located 46 kilometers west of northern Canela and 15.7 kilometers in depth.

The strength of the quake determined the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy to send out a tsunami warning alert for the entire 4,000 miles of Chilean coastline, therefore the authorities ordered an immediate evacuation.

Reflection for computer translation exercise – Genesis Alicea

Google translation and any computer generated translation, translates word by word not giving the text its real context. What it does, is just translate words, not putting the words where they fit based on context and proper sentences. I think it is bad to use the computer generated translation due to the fact that once it is translated, the text does not make sense, but what it does it gives you an idea of to what certain words translate to and if they make sense to the context of the actual text.

Chapter twenty three of Is That a Fish In Your Ear by David Bellos definitely explains the differences between “computer automatic translation” and “human translators.” Bellos explains that it is impossible in a way for computer translators to give an perfect translation due to the fact that a computer needs to know the entire grammar of the language, but human do not even have that knowledge: according to the text, “nobody has figured out how to get a computer to know what a sentence is about.” (Bellos page 251) Bellos also speaks about Google Translate; what it does is that it “instead of taking a linguistic expression as something that requires decoding, Google Translate (GT) takes it as something that has probably been said before. It uses vast computing power to scour the Internet in the blink of an eye looking for the expression in some text that exists alongside its paired translation.” (Bellos page 254) By this he is stating that most of the time that the translator is used it does not deal with the meaning of the word. Therefore it is better when human translate because humans give meaning to text, humans “produce characteristically fluent and meaningful outputs.” (Bellos page 256)

El president de Univision, Randy Falco, aseguró hoy que el aspirante a la nominación republicana a la Casa Blanca para 2016 Donald Trump faltó al respeto al periodista Jorge Ramos y a la comunidad hispana.

“El reciente trato que Jorge Ramos recibió en la conferencia de prensa del señor Trump en Iowa es despreciable. Como candidato presidencial, Trump va a recibir preguntas incómodas de la prensa y debe responderlas”, indicó el presidente del canal.

Falsos Cognados – Genesis Alicea

When I first moved to this country, I was around six years old and had no idea how to speak english. The school that I attended in Westchester County had no bilingual classes for kids like me, so when I started school in the United States I was forced to speak english and write english. English did not come to me so easy, since I only spoke Spanish at home with my family and also because  I was new to this country. One day I was late to class, due to my mother’s change in work schedule. My teacher asked me why I was late and I responded by saying “because they changed my mother’s schedule at the fabric she works for.” I thought hat fabric meant “fabrica” when it really means “tela”. My teacher then told me it is not fabric but factory. That’s one of my many experiences with falsos cognados.
