Pasona International Exchange Program
As a part of our CSR activities, we will conduct the 30th Pasona International Exchange Program, a summer internship program that started in 1988 in which students from U.S.A., China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Vietnam come to Japan during their summer vacation and intern at Japanese companies. We aim to cultivate personnel who can work in the global arena with an open mind by offering a place to experience Japanese business and culture to those who otherwise may not have an opportunity to come to Japan.
About the Pasona International Exchange Program
The Pasona International Exchange Program began when Pasona Group CEO Yasuyuki Nambu met American students who wished to gain experience at Japanese companies that lead the business world. At the time, Japan was about to reach the peak of the “economic bubble”. It was a time when management at Japanese companies was gathering attention and respect throughout the world under the phrase “Japan as number one”. However, at the same time economic friction between Japan and the United States was rising, and so-called “Japan bashing” was spreading.
With the goal of promoting mutual understanding between the two countries at the personal level and true globalization, we became the first to introduce the widely-practiced Western internship system to Japan for Harvard University graduate students.
Afterwards, we opened the program to include university students from all over the United States, and when the program reached its 20th anniversary in 2007, we opened the door to students from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. From 2013, the program was expanded to include students from Indonesia and Vietnam. Overall, 446 interns and about 130 host companies have participated in the program. After graduation, the interns utilize their experiences to step into the global field, working at both Japanese companies and places such as international governmental and academic institutions.
Dates for the 2017 Program
Program Duration
Monday, July 3, 2017 through Friday, August 25, 2017 (Tentative)
※Students arrive in Japan Wednesday, June 28 and return on Saturday, August 26

Teach-in about immigration
a group of faculty in Weissman and SPA are holding an immigration teach-in this Thursday in the VC multipurpose room on the first floor during club hours. We’ll be serving pizza and drinks, too.
We’re going to have a variety of speakers, including a lawyer from CUNY Immigration Now, a representative from the New York Office for New Americans, some of the CUNY Dreamers, two of the deans, etc. Our aim is mostly to allow students to air their concerns and to get information about the situation for immigrants after the election.

Friday, December 2nd, 6 PM, Kent Hall, Room 300, C.V. Starr East Asian Library, Columbia University
Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Anderer on Kurosawa’s Rashomon
Friday 2 December, 6 PM, 300 Kent Hall, C.V. Starr East Asian Library, Columbia University
Address: 1140 Amsterdam Avenue (on W116th Street)
Followed by a reception {2 IDs to drink} RSVP requested by Nov. 22nd: [email protected]
This event celebrates the publication of Paul Anderer’s recent book: Kurosawa’s Rashomon: A Vanished City, A Lost Brother, and the Voice Inside His Iconic Films (Pegasus Books, October 2016). A filmmaker of international renown, Kurosawa and the story of his formative years remain as enigmatic as his own most famous film. Anderer investigates the driving forces that shaped and forged Kurosawa’s artistic vision: the Great Earthquake of 1923 and the dynamic energy that surged through Tokyo in its wake; the destruction of the city again in the fire-bombings of 1945, and finally, the specter and the voice of a gifted and troubled older brother—himself a star in the silent film industry—who took Kurosawa to see his first films, and who led a rebellious life until his desperate end. Anderer’s book, like this talk, addresses how a film like Rashomon came to be, and why it endures to illuminate the shadows and the challenges of our present.
Participants:
Haruo Shirane, Shincho Professor of Japanese Literature and Culture and Chair of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures
David Lurie, Associate Professor of Japanese History and Literature and Director of the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture
Geoffrey O’Brien, Editor in Chief of the Library of America and author of The Phantom Empire

Endowment for the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture, the University Seminar on Japanese Culture, the Heyman Center for the Humanities, the Society of Fellows in the Humanities, and the Deans of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences
