Conversation Partners Program
The Conversation Partners Program matches native and nonnative speakers of English for informal conversations. It is a great way for nonnative students to gain confidence in English, for native speakers to gain experience in communicating across language barriers, and for both native and nonnative speakers to expand their cultural knowledge, make friends, and build a network of professional contacts. To participate, you should be willing to commit to meeting your partner on a regular basis throughout the semester. If you have meet at least seven times, you will receive a certificate at the end of the semester—a great way to enhance your resume.
For more information and to sign up, see https://blogs.baruch.cuny.edu/conversation. The sign-up deadline isMonday, February 10th.
Please encourage especially your native students to participate, since generally more nonnative than native students sign up. Please feel free to circulate the announcement above and/or the attached flyer.
Thank you!

Shomyo no Kai–Voices of a Thousand Years at Japan Society
NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT
Shomyo no Kai–Voices of a Thousand Years
Co-presented with the Mid-Manhattan Performing Arts Foundation at St. Bartholomew’s Church.
OFFSITE EVENT
St. Bartholomew’s Church
Park Ave. at 51st St.
Location and directions
The glorious, reverberating voices of two dozen Buddhist priests in colorful robes fill the grand hall of St. Bartholomew’s Church. One of the oldest living forms of vocal music, shomyo is believed to have originated in India before traveling along the Silk Road and eventually entering Japan in the 6th century, where it has been practiced ever since. The critically acclaimed group Shomyo no Kai–Voices of a Thousand Years, comprising priests from the Shingon and Tendai sects whose mission is to showcase the beauty of shomyo as an art form, performs the contemporary shomyo work Life in an Autumn, written in the aftermath of 9/11 by New York- and Tokyo-based composer Ushio Torikai.
Pre-performance Lecture on shomyo’s history and musical form led by composer Ushio Torikai. Open to ticket holders only. Begins one hour prior to the concert in the St. Bart’s Chapel. Space is limited, first come, first served. Acclaimed composer Ushio Torikai is known for her wide ranging works and for being one of the rare contemporary composers to compose for Buddhist chant groups. The New York Times applauded Torikai’s music as “…exuberant and spectacular.”
TICKETS
$30/$24 Japan Society and St. Bartholomew’s Church/Friends of Great Music members. General admission.
Advance Tickets available through the Japan Society Box Office. Walk-up tickets in the evening of the concert available through the St. Bartholomew’s Church box office, based on availability.

Study Abroad Fair (Feb. 11th from 12:00 to 2:30)
I am writing to inform you of the upcoming Baruch College Spring Semester Study Abroad Fair. The Spring Semester Fair will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 from 12:00 noon to 2:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room (1-107) on the ground floor of the William and Anita Newman Vertical Campus. Someone from the Study Abroad Office will be bringing flyers for the fair by departmental offices, and I would be very grateful if one or more of them could be posted. I would like to warmly invite you and the other members of the department to come to the fair, and I would be grateful if you could encourage your students, and the students of your colleagues, to do the same.
Well over three hundred students attended the Study Abroad Fair last spring. These fairs offer a wonderful opportunity for program providers to speak to Baruch students about the study abroad programs available to our students. This year, exchange students from our partner universities who are studying at Baruch this term will be staffing tables to give Baruch students even more authoritative information about campus life abroad. The Study Abroad Fair also gives Baruch faculty members the chance to learn more about the programs our students attend. Understanding the kinds of academic and cultural experiences our students have abroad will help you gain a better sense of how study abroad might be more thoroughly integrated into a student’s overall college career.
If you have any questions regarding the details of the fair, please contact Nathaly Martinez, Study Abroad Coordinator by phone at (646) 312-2090, or via email at [email protected].
We look forward to seeing you at the fair.
With all good wishes,
Richard
