Eleven dead, one million evacuees and millions of dollars in losses by an earthquake in Chile

Santiago, Chile | September 17, 2015

(EFE/14ymedio)- The number of deaths resulting from the earthquake that occurred Wednesday night in northern Chile already amounts to eleven people, as reported by the director of the National Emergency Office (ONEMI), Ricardo Toro. In addition there are nine injured, one missing, one million evacuees and millions of dollars in material losses.

The telluric movement- the third strongest in the history of this troubled nation, where in 1960, the largest earthquake was registered in history- it occurred at 7:54PM local time and its epicenter was located 46 kilometers west of northern Canela and 15.7 kilometers in depth.

The strength of the quake determined the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy to send out a tsunami warning alert for the entire 4,000 miles of Chilean coastline, therefore the authorities ordered an immediate evacuation.
