The dictionary I was assigned was the Larousse Gran Diccionario Moderno. It was published in 1984 and its main contributor Ramon Garcia-Pelayo y Gross was a professor at many universities listed on the opening page. Larousse published this edition Buenos Aires, Mexico D.F., New York and Paris. The forward states that it was published “with consideration for vocabulary, spelling and phonetics peculiar to Spanish and English speakers of the Americas.”

I was personally disappointed with this dictionary, Larousse is known for its general language dictionaries and this may have been useful at the time of publication but when looking up a word from english to Spanish and vice versa there was no link between the two words. The word I used as an example was “intern” which translated to “interno” however when the reader looks up “interno” it does not translate to “intern.” This makes it difficult for speakers of english as well as speakers of Spanish who would probably look up “intern” after hearing the word and would find the word “interno” that means something different. This dictionary wouldn’t be as useful today because of its size and it is not old enough to contain words that could not be found in dictionaries today.
