2017 TOMODACHI Daiwa House Student Leadership Conference IV held in Boston, MA. April 7th-9th

My name is Patrick Hall, conference coordinator for the U.S.-Japan Council. I am writing today about an exciting opportunity for American and Japanese students at your school to participate in the 2017 TOMODACHI Daiwa House Student Leadership Conference IV held in Boston, MA. April 7th-9th.

The theme of the conference is “Navigating the Past, Charting the Future: Innovation and Engagement in U.S.-Japan Relations”.  We are looking for enthusiastic undergraduate/graduate American and Japanese students who have interests in U.S.-Japan relations, Japanese or American culture, and/or want to meet peers with similar interests. It is an opportunity for leadership training and networking, to learn about Japanese and Japanese-American contributions on a national level, and to think about ways they, as students, might contribute to strengthening the U.S.-Japan relationship in the present and future.

There is no cost to students to participate!Transportation to and from the conference, as well as food and accommodations will be provided to all students free of charge.  Attached is our recruitment packet, with an invitation letter from our President, Irene Hirano Inouye, a flyer about the conference (both in English and Japanese) to share with students on your campus, as well as information about the application process.

The Deadline For All Applications is Monday, February 20th

February 10th Deadline for Conversation Partners Program (CPP)

ANNOUNCEMENT

This semester’s Conversation Partners Program is about to begin. Are you interested in joining?

The Conversation Partners Program matches native and nonnative speakers of English for informal conversations. It is a great way for nonnative students to gain confidence in English, for native speakers to gain experience in communicating across language barriers, and for both native and nonnative speakers to expand their cultural knowledge, make friends, and build a network of professional contacts. To participate, you should be willing to commit to meeting your partner on a regular basis throughout the semester. If you have met at least seven times, you will receive a certificate at the end of the semester—a great way to enhance your resume.

To learn more and to sign up, go to:

Funding Opportunities from the Paula Berggren Enrichment Fund

Funding Opportunities from the Paula Berggren Enrichment Fund

The Paula Berggren Enrichment Fund offers faculty in the humanities at Baruch financial support to take their students to participate in extracurricular activities that enrich coursework. Funds may be used to defray the cost of admission to a museum, theatre, concert, or similar cultural event. Faculty may be awarded up to approximately $40 per student for this purpose. This funding may not be used for transportation or food.

Faculty may submit an activity-specific application for funds (which can be found here) to the standing committee, which is housed in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences. Committee members for the 2016-2017 academic year are Paula Berggren, Professor Emeritus of English; Susan Tenneriello, Associate Professor of Theatre; and Boo Choi, Director of Administrative and Financial Services for the Weissman School. Early submissions are encouraged, though applications are accepted through the last month of the semester for which they are being submitted.

In addition, students who wish to take a course in the humanities but face financial constraints may also apply for funds to cover tuition costs. The student application form can be found here. Students may be granted up to $750 in aid.

For further information on the Paula Berggren Enrichment Fund contact the office of Dean Romero.
