cropped-events-waku-waku-nyctwitter“Waku Waku” is a new Japanese pop culture festival launching this summer in New York City. Waku Waku +NYC brings together the worlds of anime, manga, music, food, film, and fashion inside Brooklyn’s Greenpoint and Williamsburg neighborhoods. Featuring exhibits, panels, screenings, and interactive events across multiple locations, Waku Waku +NYC looks to blend Japanese pop culture with Brooklyn culture. We look to gather a group of creative artists from Japan in order to share their passions with us. It’s Cool Japan meets New York’s Coolest Borough. With a focus on access and engagement, Waku Waku +NYC is built to inspire new audiences, new ideas, and feel “Waku Waku!” (わくわく) = Japanese “excitement in a dream-like state.” We want your dreams, ideas, and passions to come into fruition all in one event!

Professor Shige (CJ) Suzuki (Baruch College) also participated in one of the featured panels: Anime and Manga Studies

The Japan Foundation, New York and The New School’s Parsons School of Design, Design Studies and Industrial Design programs present “Japanese Design Today: Unique, Evolving, Borderless – with Hiroshi Kashiwagi and Yoshifumi Nakamura.” Hiroshi Kashiwagi, professor at Musashino Art University, and architect/ furniture designer Yoshifumi Nakamura will each discuss the evolution, distinguishing characteristics, and current state of Japanese design today.

For communication between cultures to occur, words and language become essential tools. Japanese design, however, has been proven capable of transcending language barriers and fostering communication and understanding between cultures. Throughout its history, Japan has enthusiastically embraced elements of other cultures while developing and retaining its own unique sense of design aesthetic, which today is recognized and appreciated throughout the world. But as Japanese society has transformed socially, geopolitically, and economically, so has Japanese design transformed to accommodate these changes. As the world gets smaller and access to information wider, people seek a more personal connection with the world around them, which has given way to a new era of Japanese design. Both Kashiwagi and Nakamura will tour Los Angeles and New York to delve into these topics and more.

A Q&A session will follow the presentations, moderated by Jilly Traganou, Associate Professor and Director of the Design Studies MA program, School of Art and Design History and Theory, Parsons School of Design.

This event is free and open to public, but advanced online registration is required.Eventbrite - Japanese Design Today: Unique, Evolving, Borderless

Volunteers Needed at PS 147

The PS 147 in Brooklyn is introducing the first public Japanese Dual Language Program and is looking for student or professional Japanese speaking volunteers. Its pilot has Pre-K and Kindergarten students who will study Japanese language and culture for half the school day, and a traditional English program for the other half. The program (which is still in its infancy) seeks those who love to work with children, are looking to  working in the education field, and wish to gain school credit or volunteer experience. Help from volunteers would be critical to the program’s growth and success. For inquiries, please contact JDLP Committee Member Melita Issa at [email protected].

Takashi Murakami
The IFC Center is “thrilled to welcome acclaimed Japanese artist Takashi Murakami in person this month for two nights in a row, presenting a personal favorite — Michael Mann’s THIEF — and his own directorial debut JELLYFISH EYES.”

Movie Night with Takashi Murakami: THIEF
Murakami in person present and discuss a personal favorite — Michael Mann’s 1981 neo(n)-noir THIEF — as part of our ongoing “Movie Night” series. “A philosophical thriller filled with modernist cool. James Caan’s the thief, contradictorily building and risking a future mapped out as meticulously as any of his lucrative hi-tech jobs; testing his emotional and criminal independence to the limits; eventually recognising that he’s either exercising or exorcising a death wish.” – Time Out (London)

JELLYFISH EYES
“Murakami’s directorial debut JELLYFISH EYES tells the story of a young boy and his unlikely new friend: a flying, jellyfish-like sprite. To his surprise, the boy soon discovers that his classmates all have similar friends—but that they, their creators and even their town itself aren’t what they seem. A hopeful tale pointedly set in a post-Fukushima world, Murakami’s film boasts unforgettable creature designs and handmade special effects nearly a decade in the making—a triumph of creativity and wonder.”

Yasujiro Ozu

Catch the classic films of legendary director Yasujiro Ozu at the IFC Center. The series ends September 27th.

Today, he is considered one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema, with such major filmmakers as Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders, Abbas Kiarostami, Mike Leigh, Aki Kaurismaki, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Pedro Costa and Claire Denis citing him as a profound influence upon their work.”

MAY 9 – STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL – ART RECEPTION

Shuto Okayasu,  Sungjin Lee

SUNGJIN LEE & SHUTO OKAYASU Joint Exhibition

STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL

May 9 – 31, 2015, 7-10:30pm

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 9, 4-6pm

Press Release

Sungjin Lee and Shuto Okayasu are pleased to announce their joint exhibition at ShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn, NY at 18 Whitwell Pl, Brooklyn, NY 11215 from Saturday May 9 to Sunday May 31, 2015.

The exhibition consists of artworks created by 2 artists, Shuto Okayasu from Japan and Sungjin Lee from South Korea.

Okayasu has been bouncing between photo-realistic and surrealistic images and sampling famous cartoon characters and scenes to create his paintings. Heavily influenced by cut and paste, sampling of Hip Hop culture, he patchworks his perception of everyday life, navigating viewers into a hyper realistic dreamy world.

Lee has lived in Japan for 10 years before residing in the US. Taking objective views to post-World War 2 South Korea and Japan under the influences of US government generates the ideology behind his works. He explores his unique vision through paintings, sculptures, music and video works.

This exhibition explores perspective on how our world is structured through Okayasu and Lee’s works.
