(EFE/14ymedio)- The death toll from the earthquake that struck northern Chile this Wednesday evening rose to eleven as reported by the director of Chile’s national emergency office, Ricardo Toro.  In addition to the millions in damages caused by the earthquake, there were 1 million residents evacuated, one person missing and nine injured.

The earthquake –the third strongest in this shaken nation, the site of the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in 1960 occurred at 19:54 local time and its epicenter, located 46 km. west of Canela, a northern region of Chile.  The earthquake was felt 15.7 km. away.

The force of the quake made it necessary for Chile’s Hydrographic and oceanographic service of the Navy to issue a tsunami alert and order immediate evacuations to coastal areas.  Chile has more than 4,000 km of coastline.

Chile levantó su alerta de tsunami el jueves y las islas del Pacifico sólo registraron olas menores, horas después de que un terremoto de magnitud 8,3  había provocado temores de olas masivas.

“La alerta de tsunami está levantada para todo el territorio nacional”, dijo la Oficina Nacional de Emergencia del Gobierno chileno en un tweet.

El Centro de Alerta de Tsunamis del Pacifico (PTWC por sus siglas en inglés) emitió un mensaje de advertencia informando que se pronosticaba ondas de tsunami peligrosas para algunas costas. “Las ondas de tsunami han sido observadas”, dijo en el ultimo aviso el jueves.

El PTWC, dijo que las primeras olas llegaban al pueblo de Rikitea en la parte oriental de la isla de Mangareva en Polinesia Francesa, pero eran solamente de 28 centímetros de altura. Sucedió en las horas tempranas de la mañana en Rikitea, cuando habría poca gente en las playas.
