11 Casualties, 1 Million evacuated and Millions in damages

(EFE/14ymedio)- The death toll from the earthquake that struck northern Chile this Wednesday evening rose to eleven as reported by the director of Chile’s national emergency office, Ricardo Toro.  In addition to the millions in damages caused by the earthquake, there were 1 million residents evacuated, one person missing and nine injured.

The earthquake –the third strongest in this shaken nation, the site of the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in 1960 occurred at 19:54 local time and its epicenter, located 46 km. west of Canela, a northern region of Chile.  The earthquake was felt 15.7 km. away.

The force of the quake made it necessary for Chile’s Hydrographic and oceanographic service of the Navy to issue a tsunami alert and order immediate evacuations to coastal areas.  Chile has more than 4,000 km of coastline.

(EFE/14ymedio). – The number of deaths due to the earthquake this past Wednesday night in the north of Chile is rising now to eleven people, informed the director of the National Office of Emergency (Onemi), Ricardo Toro. To this toll is added nine wounded, one missing person, one million evacuated, and millionaire material losses.

The earthquake – the third one most powerful in the history of this long-suffering nation, where in 1960 the mayor earthquake in history was registered – it happened at 7:54 pm local time and its epicenter was located 28 miles west from the town of Canela and was 9.7 miles deep.

The force of the quake urged the Hydrographic and Oceanography Services of the army of Chile to put out a Tsunami alert for the entire Chilean coastline, about 2 miles long, for which the authorities ordered an immediate evacuation.

Chile levanto su advertencia de tsunami el jueves y las Islas del Pacifico solo registraron olas menores, horas después de que un terremoto de magnitud 8.3  habría causado temor de olas masivas.

“La alerta de tsunami se levanta para todo el territorio nacional”, dijo la oficina nacional de emergencia del gobierno chileno en un tweet.

El Centro de Alerta de Tsunamis del Pacífico (PTWC por sus siglas en ingles) había emitido un mensaje de advertencia informando que peligrosas olas de tsunami estaban pronosticadas en algunas costas. “Se han observado olas de tsunami”, fue la ultima noticia comunicada este jueves.

El PTWC dijo que las primeras olas llegaron a la ciudad oriental de Rikitea, en la Isla de Mangareva en Polinesia Francesa, pero solo midieron 28 centimetros de altura. Esto sucedio en las primeras horas de la mañana en Rikitea, lo que significa que pocas personas estuvieron en las playas.

Chile levantó su alerta de tsunami el jueves y las islas del Pacifico sólo registraron olas menores, horas después de que un terremoto de magnitud 8,3  había provocado temores de olas masivas.

“La alerta de tsunami está levantada para todo el territorio nacional”, dijo la Oficina Nacional de Emergencia del Gobierno chileno en un tweet.

El Centro de Alerta de Tsunamis del Pacifico (PTWC por sus siglas en inglés) emitió un mensaje de advertencia informando que se pronosticaba ondas de tsunami peligrosas para algunas costas. “Las ondas de tsunami han sido observadas”, dijo en el ultimo aviso el jueves.

El PTWC, dijo que las primeras olas llegaban al pueblo de Rikitea en la parte oriental de la isla de Mangareva en Polinesia Francesa, pero eran solamente de 28 centímetros de altura. Sucedió en las horas tempranas de la mañana en Rikitea, cuando habría poca gente en las playas.

Chile retiró su advertencia de tsunami el Jueves e islas pacíficas solo experimentaron olas menores, horas después que un terremoto de magnitud de 8.3 condujo a miedos de elevaciones masivas.

“La advertencia de tsunami fue retirada para todo el territorio nacional”, dijeron los de la oficina de emergencia nacional del gobierno Chileno en un Tweet.

El centro de advertencia de tsunami en el Pacífico (PTWC por sus siglas en inglés) emitió un mensaje de amenaza diciendo que olas peligrosas de tsunami fueron pronosticadas para todas las costas. “Las olas de tsunami están siendo observadas”, dijeron en la mas reciente actualización el Jueves.

El PTWC dijo que las primeras olas venían llegando por el Este del pueblo Rikitea, en la isla Mangevara de Polinesia Francesa, pero sólo eran de 28cm de altura. Era temprano en la mañana en Rikitea, quiere decir que poca gente estaría en las playas.
