Peru vs. Venezuela in Women’s South American Volleyball Championship

With Mostly U18 and U20 Players, Peru Debuts Against Venezuela’s Best

 By María José Fermi

Today marks the beginning of the Women’s South American Volleyball Championship. Venezuela is Peru’s first opponent in Pool A, which also includes Colombia and Paraguay. Like it or not, only two teams will advance to the semifinals, so the fight begins now.

Once again, Peru comes to a championship with a mixed bag of a team. Although this is a women’s tournament, only five players on its 2015 South American team (Uribe, Yllescas, Egoavil, Muñoz and Olemar) belong in that category.

The other nine are either U18 (Regalado, De la Peña, Guerrero and Sánchez) or U20 (Leyva, Gómez, Canessa and Almeida). The number of qualified players in Peru is limited, and this is the reality that coaches  confront in almost all categories of national volleyball (especially the adult ones).
